**Originally Listed At $450** Alexander Pope (American, 1849-1924). Chromolithograph, 1878. Signature, date, and printing information (Armstrong & Co. Boston) in the plate at bottom of image. An original, antique chromolithograph from Alexander Pope's series "Upland Game Birds and Water Fowl of the United States". In this composition, Pope presents a pair of mallard ducks gliding across a serene pond, with one of the ducks eagerly opening its beak to catch a tasty berry. Est: $800 - $1,200

Notice how naturalistic Pope's details and hues are. Furthermore, Pope's composition is wonderful; he placed the ducks right up to the picture plane, contrasting their saturated hues with the more subtle tones of their picturesque surroundings. A magnificent example of Alexander Pope's keen observation and artistry, mounted in exceptional framing that was artistically designed with carefully selected, museum-quality materials. Size (sight view): 13" L x 20" W (33 cm x 50.8 cm) Size (frame): 31.125" L x 38.125" W (79.1 cm x 96.8 cm) Alexander Pope was an American sporting artist who contributed to the American style of watercolors during the 19th century. (as English Setters) William Secord, Dog Painting, A History of the Dog in Art, Woodbridge, 2009, p. 399, no. 517, illus. (as English Setters) One of the few American artists represented in the Scaife collection, Alexander Pope was critically acclaimed for his paintings of animals. Indeed, critics compared him with the great animal painters Sir Edwin Henry Landseer and Rosa Bonheur for his paintings that appealed to the sympathies of animal lovers. The Boston-born artist started his work as a sculptor in the 1880s, and then transitioned into painting as a specialist artist of dog portraits. English Setters, possibly commissioned by a Mr. Harry Dutton, looks to the profile format of the purebred portrait, but breaks the strict framing as the two dogs turn their heads attentively toward the viewer. Unlike the strict profile, full-body compositions of the purebred portrait type, this artwork depicts the pets in a more casual, relaxed environment. The present composition is one that Pope found successful, and he made variations of it for different clients.
