(40.6 x 55.8 cm) Estimate: $10,000-15,000 Aleksander Pavlovich Popov (Russian, 19th c.) Aleksandr Popov studied under Carl Wilhelm von Rabus and Alexei Savrasov at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1851–58) as well as under Sokrat Vorobyov at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1858–65). He contributed to exhibitions at the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1858. Both painter and a teacher, he was awarded the title of first-class artist of landscape painting in 1865. The present painting features a dominant sky with an extensive landscape in the background reminiscent of Dutch landscape painting of the 18th and 19th centuries. Condition: The painting is not lined. There is very fine craquelure throughout the sky. Under the UV light, there is some strengthening to the sky and a few retouches to the clouds. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
