      • Julius Porcellis, Sailing Boats off a Rocky Coast
        Nov. 16, 2024

Julius Porcellis, Sailing Boats off a Rocky Coast

        Est: €12,000 - €14,000

Monogrammed lower right: JP (on the rock) Julius Porcellis created seascapes in the style of his father Jan, with whom he was apprenticed. Apart from the fact that they both painted marine paintings, they also have the same monogram. As a result, the works of father and son are often confused. In this case, the rocks washed by the water and the calm colour composition reduced to brown and grey tones speak more for Julius.

PORCELLIS, JULIUS (Rotterdam circa 1609 - circa 1645 Leiden) Ships on a stormy sea. Oil on panel. Monogrammed lower right on mast: I.P. 26.7 x 34.8 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Germany.

      • Julius Porcellis (Rotterdam 1609 - 1645 Leyden)
        Sep. 29, 2004

        Julius Porcellis (Rotterdam 1609 - 1645 Leyden)

        Est: €4,000 - €6,000

Ships on a choppy sea, en grisaille, monogrammed in the driftwood at lower right J P, oil on paper mounted on panel, 22 x 38 cm, framed, (Wo). In 1990, a similar seascape by Julius Porcellis bearing the same monogram and featuring an identical sailing boat, likewise painted on paper and mounted on panel, figured in the gallery of Rafael Valls in London. The present work, executed in monochrome brownish hues, unites the spontaneity of the drawing and the substantiality of the colouring, which lend the work a rare freshness. Provenance: The present painting was traditionally regarded as a work by Simon de Vlieger and was auctioned at such in 1935 by Kende in Vienna.
