        CHARLES ETHAN PORTER (1847 - 1923) Chrysanthemums.

        Est: $15,000 - $25,000

CHARLES ETHAN PORTER (1847 - 1923) Chrysanthemums. Oil on linen canvas, circa 1881-1883. 355x435 mm; 14x17⅛ inches. Signed in oil, lower left. Provenance: the estate of Constance E. Clayton, Philadelphia. Chrysanthemums is an excellent example of the floral still life painting of Charles Ethan Porter, and was likely made during or shortly after his brief but important Paris period. In 1881, Porter moved to Paris for approximately two years, where he enrolled at the École Nationale Superiéure des Arts Décoratifs before studying at the Académie Julian, like many American painters. While he unsuccessfully attempted to show his work in the Salon, his still life paintings were infused with a realism greatly influenced by Henri Fantin-Latour's lush still life painting. With Paris's growing fascination with Japanese art and culture, the Asian chrysanthemum had also became a popular flower and painting subject. Helen K. Fusscas in The Paintings of Charles Ethan Porter notes how Porter's large, flourished signature with the independent marks in the capital "E" dates to paintings made between 1881-1883. Fusscas pp. 51-52.

He began his career exhibiting still lifes and returned to them his entire life, both fruit and flowers. However, for whatever reason, very few examples of Porter's work other than still life examples are known to exist today, making his work overall quite rare.

CHARLES ETHAN PORTER Still Life with Flowers.

CHARLES ETHAN PORTER Still Life with Flowers. Oil on canvas board. 350x397 mm; 14x15 3/4 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto. Provenance: The Anthony and Davida Artis Collection of African-American Fine Art, Flint, Michigan; private collection, Chicago. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Porter (1847-1923) was a noted still life and floral painter. Porter was active from 1865 to 1915, both in New York and Hartford. In 1869, he was one of the first African Americans to study at the National Academy in New York. He later settled in Hartford where he befriended his neighbor, the famous author Mark Twain. Around 1881, after raising $1,000 from auctioning his paintings, Porter moved to Paris, where for approximately two years he enrolled at the École Nationale Superiéure des Arts Décoratifs before studying at the Académie Julian. While he unsuccessfully attempted to show his work at the Salon, his still life paintings were infused with a realism greatly influenced by Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) and by his experimentation with plein air painting.

Attrib Charles Ethan Porter oil Basket of Roses

        Est: $4,000 - $8,000

Porter, attributed to Charles Ethan (American, 1847-1923), Basket of Roses Still Life, oil on canvas, signed C. E. Porter lower left, 23.75 x 19.25 inches, framed measuring 26.5 x 22 inches. Porter was one of the first African-Americans to exhibit at the National Academy of Design, Charles Porter specialized in fruit and floral still life painting and was active both in New York and Hartford, Connecticut. From 1869, he studied at the National Academy, and from 1881 to 1884 was in Paris before settling in Hartford, where he became a friend of Mark Twain. Porter was born in Hartford, the son of a laborer father and a mother who worked as a house maid. Life was hard—in addition to being poor, the family was to lose six children to illness and to war. Three of his older brothers had fought during the Civil War. While he was still young, the family had moved to the nearby village of Rockville, CT. Porter graduated from high school there in 1865, and in 1868 left for Wilbraham, MA to study art at the Wesleyan Academy (now the Wilbraham & Monson Academy). From 1869 to 1873 he was enrolled at the National Academy of Design, the first African-American admitted to the school. In 1873 Porter studied with portrait, genre and landscape artist Joseph Oriel Eaton. He maintained a studio in New York City during the winter and returned to Rockville in the spring, where he painted and taught art classes. In 1878 he opened a studio in Hartford, where his still-lives sold well among the upper middle class and nouveau rich that were moving to the rapidly growing city. It was in Hartford where Porter met and became friends with writer Mark Twain. Porter’s skill as an artist cannot be in doubt as Hudson River School artist, Frederick Church, who thought that he was a superb colorist and had encouraged him to paint landscapes, bought some of his paintings in 1879. Porter did visit the Adirondack mountains in 1880, but it is for his still-lives that he is best known today. Twain was among several prominent Hartford residents who, in 1880, provided Porter with a letter of introduction to study at the L’École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France. He was abroad, studying and painting, from 1881 to 1884. A successful artist until circa 1915, Porter was one of very few artists, at the time, who focused on still-life painting. There was a distinctly noticeable decline in the quality of his work after the turn of the 20th century, so much so that the latter part of his career was marked by declining sales and poverty. Whether failing health or eyesight, racial prejudice, melancholy (his parents, two brothers and two sisters, his art dealer and good friend and artist, Samuel Comstock all died between 1900 and 1918), was the cause of the decline is unknown. However, another factor could have also contributed -- Porter’s "depression in 1893 had each lasted several years and during those times American art collectors were shifting from buying contemporary American art to that of European artists and the Europe’s Old Masters. French Impressionism was coming to the forefront in the late 1800s and although Porter was exposed to the French plein air landscape artists while in France, and expressed a desire to paint landscapes, he painted very few. Around the time of World War I, fickle art collectors no longer wanted the beautiful, serene, detailed floral and fruit still-lives of which Porter was a master. They wanted the new “faddish”, but “noisy”, disquieting compositions of Abstract Expressionism and its variants. Porter was a charter member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts (1910). He exhibited at the National Academy of Design (1871, 1876); American Society of Painters in Watercolor (1873); and the Hartford Decorative Art Society.

In 1878 he opened a studio in Hartford, where his still-lifes sold well among the upper middle class and nouveau rich that were moving to the rapidly growing city. Porter did visit the Adirondack mountains in 1880, but it is for his still-lifes that he is best known today. Around the time of World War I, fickle art collectors no longer wanted the beautiful, serene, detailed floral and fruit still-lifes of which Porter was a master.

Porter Property of a Distinguished New York Collector PROVENANCE: Richard Smith, Rhode Island; Acquired by the present owner from the above. EXHIBITED: Mason Fine Art, Atlanta, Georgia. The son of a poor and illiterate laborer, Charles Ethan Porter became one of the first, if not the first, African-American artists to study at the National Academy of Design in New York. Porter's still life paintings, as evidenced by Floral Still Life and Still Life with Roses, embrace a soft, lush quality that differentiates them from many other American still life paintings of the nineteenth century, which are often characterized by a virtuosic but harder-edged technique. Porter's work embodies a soft focus while capturing a naturalistic immediacy, qualities apparent also in his landscapes. Porter's work was enthusiastically received in the press and by his colleagues and students. He was a much-admired teacher to aspiring artists, and counted among his friends and patrons artist Frederic Edwin Church and writer Mark Twain. Thanks to the sponsorship of Mark Twain, Porter was able to travel to Paris in 1881-84, where he came under a variety of influences and was able to reach the heights of his ability. With the support of his friends and patrons, the artist went on to become a charter member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, exhibiting at the National Academy of Design, the American Society of Painters in Watercolor, and the Hartford Decorative Art Society. Although Porter's personal life is rather obscure and undocumented, it is evident that he encountered racism regularly, and with increasing intensity. Porter was acclaimed by the press and was awarded important prizes, but after settling in Hartford, Connecticut, his race began to result in social isolation. A Bavarian artist who shared his studio, Gustave Hoffman, had to sell Porters paintings door to door because no one would buy the work of a Black man. It is said that a significant part of his output in these years still hang unrecognized on the walls of Hartford homes. By the time of his death in 1923, racism had cast him into complete obscurity, and it was only very recently that he is once again recognized as one of the country's outstanding late nineteenth-century artists.
