      Sep. 13, 2018

Framed H. Possner Portrait of Woman in Head Scarf, 1932

      Est: $400 - $600

Hugo A. Possner (Prussian-born American, 1859-1933), untitled portrait of a woman wearing a head scarf, oil on board, date 1932 handwritten on back of frame. A striking portrait of a woman wearing a colorful headscarf. Her head is turned to face the viewer with a beautiful visage comprised of large brown eyes, ruby red lips, soft facial contours, and a curly brunette fringe of bangs - her engaging face wrapped by a billowing scarf with a pink, pale blue, and red checkered pattern and pink tassels - her upper body dressed in a garment of complementary, rich magenta hues. Set in what appears to be its original gilded and elaborately carved wooden frame. Size: 14" L x 11" W (35.6 cm x 27.9 cm); 18.5" L x 15.5" W (47 cm x 39.4 cm) including frame. Born in Prussia in 1859, Hugo A. Possner immigrated to the United States in 1870. By 1880, as a young man, he painted murals in New Haven, Connecticut. Possner also taught art classes for 25 years in Provincetown, Rhode Island - all the while painting portraits in New Haven, Hartford, and Waterbury, Connecticut and actively participating in art movements in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1912, Possner had moved to Los Angeles, California where he advertised as a portrait painter and commercial artist until 1932. At this point, scholars believe that he decided to return to his native land where he passed away in 1933. Possner's works were exhibited at the Daniell Gallery (Los Angeles) in 1911 and 1915 - and collected by the Orange County (California) Museum. For more information about Possner, read Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940".
