Clifford Tjapaltjarri Possum Sold at Auction Prices

Painter

Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri was born in Tjuirri, an area north west of Alice Springs also known as Napperby Station. His father was born at Ngarlu, a location west of Mt. Allan, and his mother from Warlugulong, and area southwest of Yuendumu. This broad stretch of territory defined the diversity of subject matter in Clifford's paintings. Clifford enjoyed a traditional bush upbringing and was given the name Possum by his paternal grandfather. In the 1940's, Clifford and his family re-located to Jay Creek, where he became a stockman, working at several stations throughout the area.

Clifford Possum was said to be a true master artist, his character, charisma, and total dedication to his art and dreamings, as well as his tireless promotion of his, and his families work, has set a high standard in establishing this movement from it's inception to the present day. Art lovers and collectors, both here and around the world have held the Desert Masters in high regard, because of the efforts by individuals such as Clifford.

Clifford passed away in Alice Springs on the 21st June 2002, after recently being recognised for his contribution to Australian Art and culture, by being made an "Officer of the Order of Australia". His final days where spent at the Hetty Perkins Nursing Home Alice Springs where he passed away surrounded by close family and friends. He will be sadly missed by those who worked with and knew him well, as well as art collectors and dealers around the world.
Clifford Possum was born in 1932 on Napperby Station. He worked extensively as a stockman on the cattle stations in and around his traditional country. During this time he developed an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Dreaming Trails that criss-cross the area to the north of the western McDonnell Ranges, which he depicts in painting his Dreamings.

His career as an artist began in the 50's when he carved snakes and goannas. By the 70's he was one of the most accomplished carvers in Central Australia. His first opportunity to paint came when one of Albert Namatjira's sons gave him acrylic paints and the master began his work. Clifford, living at the Papunya Community was one of the first artists to be involved with the Aboriginal Art Movement.

The art of Clifford Possum is notable for its brilliant manipulation of three-dimensional space. Many of his canvasses have strong figurative elements which stand out from the highly descriptive background dotting. In the late 70's he expanded the scope of Papunya Tula painting by placing the trails of several ancestors on the same canvas in the fashion of a road map. Within this framework, he depicted the land geographically. This laid the foundation for traditional Aboriginal Iconography to be placed on canvas. The other artist working with him took his lead and removed any elements of European Art from their work. In doing so Clifford, as well as the other artists involved with the Papunya Tula Movement helped to develop the true definition of Aboriginal Art, an art revolving around a culture, The Jukurrpa.

In some of his stories Clifford attempts to give a visual impression of sunlight, cloud, shadow and earth to denote specific times of the day. His paintings show superlative skill, incredible inventiveness of form and are visually spectacular.

Clifford's work is contemporary but essentially Aboriginal in inspiration. To appreciate its full richness it is imperative that it is seen not only by its colour, composition and balance but by its mythological detail. One of the extraordinary qualities of Clifford's work and other Western Desert artists is that they are a visual writing and speak to the Aboriginal as books do to Europeans.

When asked why he became an Artist, he answered,
"That Dreaming been all the time. From our early days, before European people came up. That Dreaming carry on. Old people carry on this law, business, schooling for the young people. Grandfather and grandmother, uncle and aunty, mummy and father, all that, they been carry on this, teach 'em all the young boys and girls. They been using the dancing boards, spear, boomerang all painted. And they been using them on body different times.

Kids, I see them all the time, painted. All the young fellas they go hunting and the old people there, they do sand painting. They put down all the story, same like I do on canvas. All the young fella they bring 'em back kangaroo. Same all the ladies, they been get all the bush fruit, might be bush onion, plum, might be honey ants, might be yala, all the kungkas (women) bring them back. Because everybody there all ready waiting. Everybody painted. They been using ochres all the colours from the rock. People use them to paint up. I use paint and canvas that's not from us, from European people. Business time we don't use paints the way I use them, no we use them from rock, teach 'em all the young fellas."

Clifford is one of the most renown Aboriginal Artist of his time. He was the chairman of the Papunya Tula Artists from the 1970's to the 1980's. His work is featured in many of the main galleries and collections around Australia and Internationaly,Collections include the National Gallery in Canberra and the New South Wales Art Gallery. His work has travelled extensively around the world, including, 'Dreamings' The Art of Aboriginal Australia in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and St Louis. He has had a book published dedicated to him and his paintings, 'The Art of Clifford Possum Japaltjarri', by Vivien Johnson. He is and has always been regarded as the leading figure in Australian Aboriginal Art.

Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri - Tjungurrayi and Tjapaltjarri Dreaming, 1998

                Est: $30,000 - $50,000

This masterful large scale painting gives symbolic expression to a secret/sacred Malierra (initiation) Ceremony, which rests at the heart of this Tjungurrayi and Tjapaltjarri Dreaming that is associated to a men's business camp at Larumba, or otherwise known as Napperby, which forms part of Anmatyerre territory. The arc motifs resting in front of the men (U-Shapes) lend expression to the men's ceremonial body paint designs, as do the straight parallel bands shown along the picture plane. Likewise the linear dot patterning along the centre of this painting also represents ritual body art, though at the same time it represents Napperby Lake, which flows beneath the earth's surface at Larumba where the men and youths are in ceremony. The star-like motifs represent native Spinifex grass. Ash from burnt Spinifex is also used in Malierra. One of the most fundamental elements in this ceremony is the men's sacred ground design, which is depicted in this work as three concentric circles.

Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri - Men's Initiation: Spider Dreaming, 1999

                Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Clifford Possum, Tim Leura, and Kaapa Tjampitjinpa, were all Anmatjerre tribesmen displaced from their traditional lands by the cattle industry. Clifford was employed at the Papunya School in the early 1970s and was encouraged by his brother, Tim Leura, to begin painting. For more than 30 years, Possum sustained a painting career based upon a decisively different vision in the representation of his Dreamings and became the most highly recognised, and revered, of Australia's desert painters. In this masterful large scale work, created in 1999, Clifford portrayed the 'Spider Dreaming' that is intimately associated with the men's ceremonies that direct the path of young Japaltjarri and Jungurrayi boys into manhood in the region around Mount Dennison and Mount Allan, the artist's birth place. The double parallel lines symbolise the initiation scaring on the chest of fully initiated men. Their string body belts are the four snake-like motifs. The curved lines with concentric circles at their centre represent the ancestral spiders and the holes where they made their way beneath the earth's surface during the creation period. The bold motifs in the centre are Spinifex grass and Spider Men sitting with their spears.

Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri - Rock Wallaby and Possum Dreaming, 1996

                Est: $16,000 - $22,000

Clifford Possum's unique artistic style is characterised by an innovative use of spatial configuration. Small early career works were a mere foretaste of the grandeur of the paintings he was to create, on an unprecedentedly massive scale, in the late 1970s. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s he continued to compile a powerful body of work which was most notable for its brilliant manipulation of three-dimensional space and the introduction of western iconography and figurative imagery, which stood out from a background of highly descriptive dotting in order to convey certain elements in his narratives. This played a dual role in making them both more intelligible to western audiences, as well as allowing him to create imaginative compositions within the parameters of the 'law'.

Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri - Rock Wallaby and Possum Dreaming, 1996

                Est: $25,000 - $35,000

This iconography in this painting relates to the initiation of young men through the re-enactment of an ancient ritual corroboree that took place during the Dreaming, at a sacred site near Yuelamu, (Mount Allan) around the border of the Tanami and Simpson Desert. With an emphasis on initiating, or leading, male youths into manhood, this ancient corroboree was first conceived by a tribe of Anmatjerre Possums and another of Pitjantjatjarra Rock Wallabies. On their first encounter, they became involved in a fierce territorial battle, which erupted when the ancient Possums ambushed the Rock Wallabies as they arrived at Yuelamu from Port Augusta, on their way to the Top-End (Darwin). Following this bitter battle the two tribes eventually made peace. They then began to share each others language and impart their ancient knowledge through ritual song, dance, body decoration, sandpaintings and other secret/sacred practices. The Rock Wallabies and ancient Possums are represented in this painting through their individual tracks, which the animals left behind as they travelled through the desert landscape. The thin parallel lines represent ritual body decoration as well as the linear pattern of movement that the corroboree dancers traditionally follow in this all-important men's ceremony.

                Est: $18,000 - $22,000

This is the tale of incestuous lust and the magical spells cast by an old Tjungurrayi man called Lintipilinti in order to seduce a woman of the wrong skin. To achieve this, Lintipilinti used sacred songs and a hairstring spindle that he made from his own hair and a pair of thin sticks. In this work he is depicted as a large U shape with a club that he carries beside him. The club has multiple meanings in the sacred version of this mythology, yet even in the public version it is menacing enough. The object of his desire is a wrong skinned Napangardi woman who is travelling from Yuelamu (Mount Allen) looking for the native sugar that is found in abundance on Eucalyptus leaves where it is deposited by small flying ants. The woman does not realise until too late that she is being stalked by the Tungurrayi who is telepathically calling her to him while using ritual paraphernalia and a sacred ground painting. Overcome by lust, the Tjungurrayi man drops the hair string that he is braiding, and it scatters like love on the wind. A whirlwind blows in an attempt to destroy his love magic but it is to no avail. Though she is a strictly forbidden sexual partner Lintipilinti shows no concern. Eventually he will be punished at another place for this indiscretion. But this part of the narrative takes place at Ngarlu (Red Hill) where a small oval shaped rockhole is found. If prospective lovers drink from the well, it is said to have a powerful effect upon them.

                Est: $15,000 - $20,000

Clifford Possum began his artistic career in the 1950s at Glen Helen, when he found that he earned more pay and lived under better conditions while producing carvings for the developing tourist market than he had as a stockman. His carvings were renowned in Central Australia for their brilliant craftsmanship and realistic detail. He did not join the growing band of active painters working at Papunya until 1972. His early paintings conveyed a remarkable sense of atmosphere. These stood out from those of other Western and Central Desert artists, who were less preoccupied with evoking a psychological mood in their paintings. As he developed his art practice, Clifford introduced Western iconography and figurative imagery to convey certain elements in his narratives. This played a dual role in both making them more intelligible to western audiences, and allowing him to create imaginative compositions within the parameters of the ‘law’.

                Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Clifford Possum was the first recognised star of Western Desert art and one of Australia’s most distinguished painters of the late twentieth century. His unique artistic style was characterised by its innovative use of spatial configuration in paintings that conveyed a remarkable sense of atmosphere. By 1990 Clifford had lived away from his country for long periods of time since first painting at Papunya in the early 1970s. His birthplace was at Napperby, on Anmatjerre land. Napperby Lake or Larumba, near the border of the Tanami and Simpson Deserts, is a saltwater lake which flows along a series of claypans, occasionally disappearing beneath the surface. The Worm Dreaming belongs to Narripi, near Gidyea Creek,100 km east of Mount Allen, very close to the artist's birthplace. The wiggly lines depict the trails of the Ancestral Worm Men as they travelled underground.
