Helen Beatrix Potter Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, b. 1866 - d. 1943

Born in London in 1866, Helen Beatrix Potter had a love of the natural world that led to the development of her art. Beatrix Potter's fascination with the plants she drew led her to study at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew, where she honed her skills in scientific illustration art. Beatrix Potter studied at the National Art Training School.

In 1902, Beatrix Potter published the first of her children’s books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, followed by dozens of other books, including The Tale of Benjamin Bunny and The Tale of Tom Kitten. She also created merchandise based on her books, including games, toys, and dolls, and offered her illustration art for sale, all helping to increase the value of Beatrix Potter books. She passed away in 1943. Beatrix Potter's drawings and books are found alongside other valuable written works in galleries of rare children's books worldwide.

                Jun. 13, 2024

Potter (Beatrix) The Tale of Peter Rabbit, first trade edition, deluxe issue, Frederick Warne and Co., London & New York, [1902].

                Est: £150 - £200

Potter (Beatrix) The Tale of Peter Rabbit, first trade edition, deluxe issue with 'wept big tears' on p.51 and bound in mustard-yellow cloth rather than paper boards, half-title, leaf-pattern endpapers, 31 full-page colour illustrations by Potter, small ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper, a few abrasion marks, pp.58-9 and 66-7 stuck together, p.80 with short marginal tear, gutter cracked and weak, final leaf becoming detached, contents shaken, lacking pp.9-10 and pp.15-16, lacking rear free endpaper, lower hinge broken, original mustard-yellow cloth with mounted colour illustration on upper cover, t.e.g., slightly rubbed and soiled, [Linder p.421, Quinby 2], 16mo, London & New York, Frederick Warne and Co. [1902]. *** Rare deluxe issue of the first trade edition of the first book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter. Originally published in two privately printed editions of 250 and 200 copies (December 1901 and February 1902, respectively), this first trade edition was the first in which all of Potter's designs are printed in color. Leslie Linder records that 2000 copies from the first printing of 8000 were issued in "green cloth, light green cloth or olive-green cloth". This mustard-yellow cloth variant is therefore unrecorded by Linder, making it perhaps the rarest of the different deluxe issues of Peter Rabbit.

I have 2 piebald mice, but Hunca Munca fights with them", folds, corner crease, 5th March, 1905. *** A superb picture-letter by Beatrix Potter with a charming drawing of her pet mouse Hunca-Munca sat on her finger.  Potter references her work on her upcoming publications The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and The Pie and the Patty Pan and includes mention of her frustrations at the work required "I get quite tired of the pictures before the book is finished" as well as charming descriptions of her domestic pets.

                Est: £60,000 - £80,000

Potter (Beatrix) Complete set of four original illustrations for the nursery rhyme, 'This pig went to market', four illustrations on three sheets, the first sheet 'This Pig went to Market/ This Pig staid at home', the second with 'This Pig had a bit of Meat;' [together with] 'And this Pig had none!', and the third 'This little Pig cried "Wee! Wee! Wee! I can't find my way home!", pen and black ink, traces of pencil under-drawing, watercolour, heightened with touches of white, on wove paper, each sheet approx. 225 x 285 mm (8 3/4 x 11 1/4 in), under glass, minor spotting and surface dirt, uniformly framed, circa 1890 (3) *** The only complete set of illustrations by the artist for a nursery rhyme, known to have survived. The present set were originally drawn by Beatrix Potter in the 1890s for her cousin, Stephanie Hyde-Parker. In 1922, with encouragement by Anne Carroll Moore of New York Public Library, Potter decided to publish a book of nursery rhymes, chiefly comprised from old drawings with a few alterations and additions. The present works were used as the basis for her illustrations of the rhyme in Cecily Parsley's Nursery Rhymes, though these contained several alterations, most notably the reversal of the final drawing.  "This picture is of special interest as it shows the famous Hill Top pony and trap. The pony's name was "Dolly", whilst the stay-at-home pig was "Old Sallie", who used to open the garden gate, and follow her mistress about , and search in her pocket for apples" - Quinby p.115. Potter (Beatrix) The Tale of Peter Rabbit, first trade edition, deluxe issue, [1902].

                Est: £600 - £800

Potter (Beatrix) The Tale of Peter Rabbit, first trade edition, deluxe issue with 'wept big tears' on p.51 and bound in mustard-yellow cloth rather than paper boards, half-title, leaf-pattern endpapers, 31 full-page colour illustrations by Potter, small ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper, a few abrasion marks, pp.58-9 and 66-7 stuck together, p.80 with short marginal tear, gutter cracked and weak, contents shaken, lower hinge broken and lacking rear free endpaper, original mustard-yellow cloth with mounted colour illustration on upper cover, t.e.g., slightly rubbed and soiled, [Linder p.421, Quinby 2], 16mo, London & New York, Frederick Warne and Co.
