Mary Potter OBE, British 1900-1981 - Autumn Tree, 1960; oil on canvas, 71 x 60.8 cm (ARR) Provenance: Basil Coleman (1916-2013), gifted by the artist and thence by descent; private collection, gifted by the above and thence by descent Note: with artist's name and titled to label attached to the reverse of the frame and bears inscription with date. Also, inscribed 'Basil Coleman' on the same label. Basil Coleman was a director and producer who worked closely with Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears for many decades. He this began when he directed the first production of Britten's work for children 'Let's Make an Opera' (1949), at Aldeburgh. Potter lived at the Red House, Aldeburgh until 1957, when she swapped houses with her friends Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, who lived overlooking the sea at Crag House from 1947. This gentle yet enigmatic autumnal scene is a brilliant example of the artist mature style of the 1960s. Her work was recently the subject of a major show at The New Art Centre, Roche Court in 2024.

Provenance With The New Art Centre, London, 10 June 1981, where purchased by the family of the present owner Mary Potter is often remembered for depicting the scenes she saw from her window, from The Window, Chiswick, 1929, to Chiswick Mall, painted in the 1930s. In using a soft and inviting pallet, Potterâs work welcomes observers into the warmth of her own familiar settings. She often painted views from her Chiswick home. It is through the lens of familiarity that we experience her works, more often than not from a perspective where we are an observer looking onto something. In this case, Bandstand, combines many elements of the artistâs oeuvre, from the interior perspectives looking out, to her rendering of costal scenes, using heavy paint, and soft tones, Potter captures elements of abstract amongst landscape in this work. This was consistent throughout her career as an artist, in later life, it was costal scenes from Aldeburgh Suffolk, where she lived for many years, that dominated the subject-matter and in the same way to those painted in London, capturing the artistâs tenderness towards the place in which she resided. As an artist, Potter, spent much time among various artistic circles, in London, she was a brief member of the Seven and Five Society, exhibited with The New English Art Club, known as the NEAC. It was during the 1930s that Potter had a variety of solo-exhibitions from the Leicester Galleries, Redfern Gallery and the New Art Centre. In 1964, a traveling retrospective of her work at Whitechapel Art Gallery, Mary Potter Paintings 1938-1964, documented a combination of the artists paintings. ARR
