Paradoxically, this depth is to be found at the surface, because it is at the surface that traces accumulate, both traces of the creation and transformation and the imprint left by the sculptor in (or by) his contact with the material. The surface is where everything is revealed: it is the meeting point between inside and outside."- Roland PoulinRoland Poulin was born in 1940 in Saint-Thomas, Ontario. His family moved to Montreal in 1944, where he studied at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal from 1964 to 1969. Upon graduating, Poulin worked as an assistant to Mario Merola. He began to exhibit his work with much success in galleries and museums in Quebec and elsewhere in the late 1960s. Over the course of his career, his sculptures and drawings have been exhibited in over 25 solo shows and more than 50 group exhibitions across Canada, as well as in Belgium, France, Great Britain, Germany and the United States. His works are found in many prominent Canadian collections, including the Musée des beaux-arts in Montréal, the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Nickle Arts Museum in Calgary, and the Canada Council Art Bank. Not only did Poulin have a successful artistic career, but he also taught drawing and sculpture at the Université de Laval and the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa. He is the recipient of several awards, including the Governor General 's Award in Visual and Media Arts (2005), the prestigious Prix Paul-Emile Borduas (2001), the Prix Ozias-Leduc (1992), the Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award (1996) and the Jean Chalmers Award (1998). Poulin lives in Sainte-Angèle-de-Monnoir, Quebec.Selected Corporate, Private and Public CollectionsAgnes Etherington Art Centre, Kingston Art Gallery of Hamilton, HamiltonArt Gallery of North York, Toronto Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto Canada Council Art Bank, Ottawa Claridge Collection, MontréalLa Maison des Arts de Sauvegarde, Montréal Lavalin, MontréalMusée d'art contemporain, MontréalMusée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal Musée du Québec, QuébecNational Gallery of Canada, OttawaNickle Arts Museum, CalgaryPrêt d'oeuvres, Ministere des Affaires Culturelles Toronto Dominion BankSelected Solo Exhibitions 2012Ultime Dialogue, Battat Contemporary, Montréal, QC2006Olga Korper Gallery, Toronto, Ontario2004Recent Works, Piere-Francois Ouellette Art Contemporain, Montréal, QC2002Olga Korper Gallery, Toronto, Ontario1999 Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Montréal, QCMontréal Télégraphe, Montréal, QuébecArt 45/Olga Korper Gallery, Montréal, Québec1998Musée du Québec, Monteal, Québec Axis Mundi (work in situ), Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Montréal, QuébecOlga Korper Gallery, Toronto, Ontario1996Olga Korper Gallery, Toronto, Ontario1995Sculpture and Drawing, Art Gallery of North York, North York, Ontario Roland Poulin: L'arbre de la connaissance (work in situ), Cégep François-Xavier-Garneau, Québec1994Roland Poulin Sculpture, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario Roland Poulin: Source noire, Galerie Charles & Martin Gauthier, Québec1993 Olga Korper Gallery, Toronto, Ontario1992Galerie Rochefort, Montréal, QuébecMuseum Folkwang Essen, Essen1991Olga Korper Gallery, Toronto, Ontario1990Canada House, London, EnglandMacdonald Stewart Art Centre, Guelph, OntarioOlga Korper Gallery, TorontoGalerie Chantal Boulanger, Montréal, Québec1989Centre culturel canadien, Paris, France1988Olga Korper Gallery, Toronto, CanadaGalerie Chantal Boulanger, Montréal, Canada1987Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, Ghent, Belgium198649th Parallel, New York, U.S.A.Espace Parachute, Montréal, Canada1984Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Kingston, Canada1983Yarlow-Salzman, Toronto, CanadaMusée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Canada1982 Galerie France Morin, Montréal, Canada198149th Parallel, New York, U.S.A.1980Galerie France Morin, Montréal, CanadaMercer Union, Toronto, Canada1979Galerie Marielle Mailhot, Montréal, Canada1976 Galerie B., Montréal, Canada1974Vehicule Art, Montréal, Canada1973Musée du Québec, Québec, CanadaGalerie III, Montréal, Canada1972Maison des Arts La Sauvegarde, Montréal, Canada1971 Musée d'art contemporain, Montréal, Canada1970Maison des Arts La Sauvegarde, Montréal, Canada Selected Group Exhibitions2010Continuum: regard sur les univers de creation de Pierre Perrault et Roland Poulin, Maison de la culture Mercier, Montreal, QC2003Works on Paper, Olga Korper Gallery, Toronto, ON2001-02 Vancouver Collects, Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver, B.C.1999 Collection permanente, Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Québec La collection du Musée du Québec, QuébecRedefining the Still Life, The Leonard & Bina Ellen Gallery, Montréal, Québec1998Croix de bois, croix de fer, Musée d'art de Joliette, Joliette, QuébecDrafts and Drawings, Glendon Gallery, York University, Toronto, Ontario1997Acquisitions récentes, Musée d'art contemporain, Montréal, QuébecThe Sculpture Project, London Regional Art & Historical Museums, London, OntarioManeuvers: Regional Representation in the Canada Council Art Bank, Ottawa Art Gallery, Ottawa, Ontario1996Reflections of the Soul, Art Gallery of North York, North York, OntarioObjects -
