  • HIRAM POWERS MARBLE SCULPTURE, BUST OF THE GREEK SLAVE
    Jun. 24, 2023

HIRAM POWERS MARBLE SCULPTURE, BUST OF THE GREEK SLAVE

    Est: $50,000 - $80,000

Hiram Powers (American 1805-1873) Life Size Bust of the Greek Slave, marble, c.1846-73, derived from the critically successful and highly acclaimed original full length standing nude (modeled 1841-43) carved 1844-1846.  The present bust exquisitely carved with head turned to proper right in a downward gaze, with hair gathered into a chignon in Greek style, with bare breasts above a beaded and palmette carved band, signed " H. POWERS Sculp, " under the back of the bust. The full length nude Greek Slave became the first American full size nude female sculpture ever exhibited when it was first exhibited at the Crystal Palace in London in 1851, and also upon her tour of the eastern United States. Thereafter, multiple versions of the bust of the Greek Slave were commissioned in Florence by English and American patrons and shipped to Paris, London and New York. Still regarded as the paragon of Neo-classicism, The pose of the head recalls the Venus de Medici and the eyes carved without pupils derived from classical antiquity. It is reported that approximately 80 of these full size busts were carved before Powers' death in 1873.  Dimensions: 24 inches total height including socle. Socle 3 inches height. Bust alone 21 inches height.  19 in.w. x 10 in. d.  Condition: Age related accumulated grime. The surface with age related mottling of a light brownish yellow color, more prominently to the back of the bust.  Visible vertical black vein in the marble on the proper left shoulder extending intermittently to the mid-chest and under arm area. Tiny black vein at proper right arm where it meets the beaded and  palmette band. Some minor roughness and scattered small chips to the beaded and palmette band underneath the breast and 1 larger chip approximately .75 inch to the underside of the beaded and palmette band to the proper left side in the line of the shoulder. Two shallow chips to the back of the bust where it meets the socle underneath the signature. Assorted scattered scuff marks. Provenance: Estate of a Collector, Hudson, Ohio

    Hiram Powers Marble Bust, Proserpine

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

(American, 1805-1873) (or Persephone), wreathed with acanthus leaves and wearing a circlet of wheat, circa 1847, signed at back of neck "H. Powers sculpt", marble, 24-1/2 x 20 x 12 in. Note: Proserpine (or Persephone) was the maiden of spring in ancient mythology and was the only daughter of Ceres (Demeter), the goddess of the harvest. Prosperine was abducted by Pluto, god of the underworld, and held captive for four months of the year, thereby causing the season of winter, but was released to earth again each spring. Proserpine was one of Powers's most popular subjects and underwent several changes by the artist. The present work is an example of the second version in which Powers replaced an elaborate wreath of wheat with a classical base of acanthus leaves. Literature: R.P. Wunder, Hiram Powers: Vermont Sculptor, Taftsville, Vermont, 1974, p. 18, another example illustrated; R.P. Wunder, Hiram Powers: Vermont Sculptor, vol. II, Catalogue of Works, Newark, Delaware, 1991, pp.188-202, another example illustrated. Provenance: John W. Stark House, Springfield, Tennessee

A 19TH CENTURY MARBLE BUST OF EVE, POSSIBLY BY HIRAM POWERS (AMERICAN, 1805-1873)

    Est: £6,000 - £8,000

A 19TH CENTURY MARBLE BUST OF EVE, POSSIBLY BY HIRAM POWERS (AMERICAN, 1805-1873) A 19TH CENTURY MARBLE BUST OF EVE, POSSIBLY BY HIRAM POWERS (AMERICAN, 1805-1873) her hair centrally parted and arranged in a loose bun with a tied ribbon, unsigned, 53cm high This fascinating bust displays many stylistic features that are typical of the work of Hiram Powers; and bears a close resemblance to his bust of 'Eve Disconsolate'. The centrally parted hair, carefully swept back and artfully arranged; the facial features and the undulating edge of the base of the bust are all typical features of Hiram Powers' work. See for instance his portrait of Anstiss Derby Rogers, circa 1843. This lady requested Powers to produce a portrait bust of her in the style of his bust of Prosperine, with the bust cut at the base with an undulating edge. This bust also features a near identical arrangement to the hair as the present bust. (Smithsonian Museum, US, Inv. No.1968.155.99). See also his bust of Prosperpine in the Albright Knox museum, circa 1839, this version is cut at the chest like our example and does not feature the usual arrangement of leaves. This style of bust proved popular and some other American sculptors also adopted this treatment, including Harriett Hosmer, (see bust of Daphne, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New YorK, and Medusa, Detroit Institute of Arts) Other busts by Hiram Powers that feature the same unusual treatment to the bottom edge of the bust including: Greek Slave Bust (1845-1846) (Berkshire Museum, MA, US) Prosperpine (third version, without foliage at the base,1849) (Smithsonian, Washington, US) Eve Disconsolate (1862), (Brooklyn Museum, US). All of these busts are illustrated in Hiram Powers: Life v. 1: Vermont Sculptor, 1805-73 (The American arts series) by Wunder, Richard P.)

Ses oeuvres sont exposées dans les principaux musées américains : the Addison Gallery of American Art (Andover, Massachusetts), the Amon Carter Museum (Texas), the Arizona State University Art Museum, the Art Gallery of the University of Rochester (New York), the Art Institute of Chicago (Illinois), the Berkshire Museum (Massachusetts), the Birmingham Museum of Art (Alabama), the Brooklyn Museum of Art (New York City), the Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), the Chrysler Museum of Art (Norfolk, Virginia), the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.), Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College (Florida), High Museum of Art (Atlanta, GA) Dallas Museum of Art (Texas), Detroit Institute of Arts, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Glencairn Museum (Pennsylvania), the Greenville County Museum of Art (South Carolina), Harvard University Art Museums, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Hudson River Museum (Yonkers, New York), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Milwaukee Art Museum, Miami University, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA), the Morse Museum of American Art, (Florida), the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston the National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.), the Newark Museum (New Jersey), the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Portland Museum of Art (Maine), the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington D.C.), the United States Senate Art Collection, the University of Cincinnati Galleries (Ohio), the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Vermont State House Fine Arts Collection (Montpelier, Vermont), the White House Collection, (Washington), the Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven, Connecticut), Huddersfield Art Gallery (UK) and Edward Lee McClain High School (Greenfield, Ohio).

    Est: £2,000 - £3,000

executed Florence circa 1863 and signed to the reverse H POWERS Sculp, raised on a turned socle, 76cm high Footnotes Thomas Henry Sutton Sotheron-Estcourt PC DL JP (1801-1876), known as Thomas Bucknall-Estcourt until 1839 and as Thomas Sotheron from 1839 to 1855, was a British Conservative politician. The eldest son of Thomas Grimston Estcourt, MP for Devizes he was educated at Harrow and Oriel College, Oxford. Estcourt was elected as MP for Marlborough in 1829 and then again in 1835 as MP for Devizes. He then switched to North Wiltshire in 1844, and continued in the Commons until 1865. Sotheron resumed the name Estcourt in 1855, and entered Lord Derby's second government in 1858 as President of the Poor Law Board. The next year, he became Home Secretary, Sotheron-Estcourt married Lucy Sarah, daughter of Admiral Frank Sotheron, in 1830. In 1839 he assumed by Royal licence the surname of Sotheron in lieu of his patronymic in order to inherit his father-in-law's property. However, in 1853 he resumed by Royal licence the surname of Estcourt in addition to that of Sotheron. He retired from public life in 1863 after a paralytic seizure and died in 1876, aged 74. Arguably one of the greatest American sculptors of the 19th century, Hiram Powers first achieved international recognition for his near life-size figure of 'The Greek Slave' in 1844. It became one of the most famous Orientalist works of art in the world and was taken on a tour of America in the late 1840's, as well as holding pride of place in the United States contribution to the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London. Powers was a Swedenborgian or 'New Churchman' believing that 'the legitimate aim of art should be spiritual and not animal' and that 'the natural body was merely a veil over the soul and spiritual body'. This belief inspired him to create 'ideal' sculpture representing an archetypal beauty. However he also produced a number of portrait busts whilst working in Italy.

After HIRAM POWERS (American, 1805-1873) MARBLE BUST: PROSERPINE Modeled 1844 Marks: Inscribed to front of base: Hiram Powers 24 inches high (61.0 cm) Proserpine was Powers's most popular sculpture. He carved 147 busts of the goddess of flowers in five different versions. The first version was completed in 1843 and shows the figure emerging from an elaborate wicker basket filled with a corsage of spring flowers. The second, the present example, was modeled a year later and features the goddess emerging from a basket filled with acanthus leaves. In the other versions Powers substituted a simple fringe of beads around the base, omitted the molding altogether, and depicted only the goddess's head and neck. Proserpine was originally intended to be a companion piece for Powers's bust Ginevra, which was executed in 1838, shortly after the sculptor's arrival in Florence. LITERATURE: R. P. Wunder, Hiram Powers Vermont Sculptor, 1805 -1873, Newark, Delaware, 1990, II:187-204.
