SEPO (SEVERO POZZATI, 1895-1983). PALAIS DE LA NOUVEAUTÉ. 1928. 46x63 inches, 116¾x160 cm. L'Affichage National Dufayel, Paris.

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

SEPO (SEVERO POZZATI, 1895-1983) PALAIS DE LA NOUVEAUTÉ. 1928. 46x63 inches, 116¾x160 cm. L'Affichage National Dufayel, Paris. Condition B: repaired horizontal tear through lower image; replaced and overpainted losses in left margin into image; repaired tears, creases and overpainting at edges, in image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Framed. Sepo designed a series of posters for this popular French department store. For the summer holidays in 1928, he took a rather avant-garde approach to advertising. Rather than illustrating models wearing the new fashions available for sale, he chose to symbolize the escape from the city to the country, the sea - wherever the bourgeoisie would go on their holidays by train. It is an exciting choice and an exciting image, realized in Machine Age majesty, of a cubistically-stylized engine speeding right out of the poster and crossing into the typography arrayed at the bottom. In the background, the hint of rolling hills or the ocean is suggested via airbrushed wavy lines. Capturing the thrill of traveling by train, this poster is both a clever use of the horizontal format and a very original way to advertise summer fashions. To help print and post posters of this size, Dorland used the services of Dufayel, one of France's largest outdoor advertising companies. Rare. Purchased at Swann in 2003, we could find no other copies at auction. Crouse p. 137, Weill / Art Deco p. 182, Sepo-Universita di Parma, 1979 p. 157, Vendre, May 1931, p. 368.

SEPO (SEVERO POZZATI, 1895-1983). NOVELTEX / POUR LE SOIR. 1932. 59x38½ inches, 149¾x97¾ cm. Sepo, Paris.

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

SEPO (SEVERO POZZATI, 1895-1983) NOVELTEX / POUR LE SOIR. 1932. 59x38½ inches, 149¾x97¾ cm. Sepo, Paris. Condition B / B+: replaced and overpainted loss in upper right corner; repaired tears, creases, abrasions and restoration at edges and in image and along vertical and horizontal folds; repaired pin holes in corners. Framed. Having studied in Bologna, Sepo began his artistic career working for the publisher Maga in his native Italy. He moved to France in 1920 and was hired by Vercasson. Ultimately he moved on to the French office of the Dorland Advertising Agency where he worked with their major clients. One of his first accounts was the shirt-maker Noveltex, with whom he continually worked over the course of almost 20 years. His first project for them was recorded in 1925 and his last published poster for the company was designed in 1951. His signature Art Deco approach to the object poster used a soft cubist style and a red, black, and white palette. One of his earlier images for the company featured a cubist-inspired shirt, and he went on to this cubist-inspired version of a dapper gentleman, using rectangles and circles as his nose and eyes in a daring, modernist way. It is a classic, highly creative Art Deco image. Crouse p. 155, Sepo / University di Parma p. 198, Weill / Art Deco p.183.

ARTIST: SEPO (Severo Pozzati, 1895-1983) SIZE: 38 3/8 x 58 1/4 in./97.5 x 148 cm PRINTER: Créations Idéa, St. Ouen DESCRIPTION: “Until the last war, the light tobacco found in Europe was usually a blend referred to as ‘English.’ Mainly Virginia tobacco, it had a pure, slightly sophisticated taste—not overly aromatic, not strong, with a very pronounced bright yellow color. The leading brands—Craven and Players—came from Great Britain. In 1932, Seita (the French Government’s tobacco monopoly) took the same tack with a brand they called Week-End, which was sold until 1971. After a period when Sepo’s work reflected the influence of Cappiello, he was developing a graphic approach closer to Cassandre’s. In this poster, he literally illustrates the product’s name. The road symbolizes freedom and relaxation” (Affiche Réclame, p. 56). Cassandre’s 1929 Route Bleue, which also played on the same tree-lined road perspective, no doubt had an influence on Sepo’s image. (Art Deco; Tobacco)

Money, Paris DESCRIPTION: Novice knitters, do not fret—the French yarn producer La Redoute has published a stylish and informative guide to eight essential knitting lessons. Founded in Roubaix in 1837, the company began incorporating mail order into their practice in 1922. In the late 1920s, they commissioned Sepo to produce this detailed poster—note the intricately woven sample in the middle, graced below by a geisha-esque knitter with spools of yarn for hair. The company's mission is made clear below: "While having fun, learn to knit" / "Later you will understand its usefulness"—a call to arms unlikely to be seen in today's advertising. (Art Deco)

    Tortonese. 1934.

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: SEPO (Severo Pozzati, 1895-1983) SIZE: 35 1/2 x 52 1/4 in./90.2 x 132.6 cm PRINTER: Gros Monti, Torino DESCRIPTION: Born near Ravenna, Pozzati grew up in Bologna where he studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts and then took up painting. In 1917 he joined the Maga agency, owned by Giuseppe Magagnoli, ex-director of Vercasson in Paris. (Along with his stable of local talents, Magagnoli held the Italian contracts of Mauzan and Vercasson artist Cappiello, the chief influencer on Pozzati's early style). Soon after moving to Paris in 1920, Pozzati began exhibiting widely and winning recognition; in 1923 he changed his name to Sepo. As early as 1928 we can see his retreat from Cappiello and begin the geometrical style that was to be his own. Here, he turns a bolt of flowing fabric into a female figure of the utmost elegance, and frames it with a pair of massive columns. The image combines grace with impact in a way that more than bears out the claim that these are "the most beautiful clothes for the Italian woman." The client must have liked the central motif—Sepo was asked to adapt it for the shop's branch in Milan. A note on the date: although Sepo created the design in 1934, it was printed in 1935, and the printer indicates that this was "A[nno] XIII"—the 13th year after Mussolini came to power in 1922. This is the larger format. (Art Deco; Fashion)
