Francisco Pradilla Ortiz Sold at Auction Prices

Historical-scenes painter, Genre Painter, Landscape painter, Portrait painter, b. 1848 - d. 1921

Francisco Pradilla Ortiz (24 July 1848 – 1 November 1921) was a prolific Spanish painter famous for creating historical scenes.

He was born in Villanueva de Gállego, in Zaragoza Province and began his studies in Zaragoza. He then transferred to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and, later, the "Academia de Acuarelistas" (Academy of Watercolorists) in Madrid.

In 1873, he became one of the first students chosen to study at the new Spanish Academy in Rome [es]. From there he had opportunities to travel to France and Venice and studied the old masters.

In 1878 he submitted his painting Doña Joanna the Mad or (Juana la Loca) to the National Exhibition of Fine Arts (Spain) and was awarded the Medal of Honor. In 1879, the Spanish Senate then commissioned him to create La Rendición de Granada (The Surrender of Granada), which took him three years to complete.[1]

In 1881 he became the Director of the Spanish Fine Arts Academy in Rome [es], but resigned from this post after two years. He traveled, mostly in Italy, portraying local themes and people. In 1897 he returned to Madrid as the director of the Museo del Prado. He held this position only briefly and then focused again on painting.

His total output is well over 1,000 paintings showing his interest in a variety of subjects and styles, often without regard of the current fashion. He is primarily recognized for his historical paintings; the last one completed in 1910 carries one of the longer titles of a major painting, Cortejo del bautizo del Príncipe Don Juan, hijo de los Reyes Católicos, por las calles de Sevilla (Retinue of the Baptism of Don Juan, son of the Catholic Monarchs, Along the Streets of Seville).

Much more common, however, are costumbristas—often romanticized studies that show local customs or manners—and landscapes that are often sketchy, with impressionistic influences. Financial duress after the bankruptcy of his bank may have imposed a special need to be productive.

Measurements: 17 x 27,5 cm; 31,5 x 41,5 cm (frame). Francisco Pradilla begins his formation as apprentice of Mariano Pescador, painter scenographer, and in the School of Fine Arts of San Luis de Zaragoza. In 1868 he continued his studies at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he was a disciple of Federico de Madrazo, Carlos de Haes, Carlos Luis de Ribera and Ponciano Ponzano. He completed his training in these years by copying works of the great masters of the Prado Museum. In 1874 he won the Drawing Prize of the "Spanish and American Enlightenment", and obtained a scholarship to study in Rome, where he lived for twenty-three years, until his appointment as director of the Prado in 1897. In 1878, he took part in the National Exhibition in Madrid and won the Medal of Honor, the same distinction he won that same year at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. As a result of these successes he received numerous commissions not only from Spain and France, but also from America and other European countries. He travels around Spain and is interested in capturing scenes full of grace and color, always supported by an exceptional mastery of drawing, although he did not have solo exhibitions, his works were part of exhibitions and competitions in cities around the world, such as London, Paris, Berlin, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires. He was director of the Spanish Academy in Rome, and a member of the Royal Academies of San Fernando and San Luis, the French Academy and the Hispanic Society of New York. He was awarded, among other decorations, the Cross of Isabella the Catholic and the Legion of Honor.of the pictorial genres he cultivated, including graphic illustration for literary publications, we must highlight that of history painting, which was the one that brought him the most fame. As a portrait painter, his activity was more restricted and his results were uneven when he had to deal with effigies of deceased people, but in front of living models he achieved portraits of serene expressiveness and studied and intoned workmanship. He also dedicated himself to genre painting, either of Italian popular inspiration or of matters of Madrid customs or of Galicia, his wife's place of origin and where he used to spend some seasons. Both in the history paintings and in these, Pradilla shows a clear inclination for outdoor settings, organizing the compositions in wide panoramic perspectives with a multitude of figures and motifs, interpreted with a very refined technique. However, the most outstanding aspect of his language is the sense of light and atmosphere, under which the tight drawing softens and merges with the luminous background through small brushstrokes of a rich colorful nuance and paste.Francisco Pradilla's work is present in the Prado Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of Bilbao, Buenos Aires, Havana and Sao Paulo, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Christchurch Art Gallery in New Zealand and the Romantic Museum in Madrid, among others.

FRANCISCO PRADILLA ORTIZ (Villanueva de Gállego, Zaragoza, 1848 - Madrid, 1921) "Vestal", Rome. Oil on canvas. Signed and located in the lower left corner. Measurements: 82 x 53 cm; 108 x 78 cm (frame). A young woman with a slender body and gathered hair is shown partially wrapped by light cloths that leave her naked torso uncovered. Her gaze is lost to ours, as the mysterious woman turns her head in a graceful movement to scan the landscape. The evening light snakes across her rosy skin, and her kinky tresses glisten with sienna highlights. With the title of this painting, Pradilla evoked the virginal, arcane beauty of the ancient priestesses of Vesta. The sense of light is outstanding, under which the tight line is softened and blended by small brushstrokes of toned colour. Francisco Pradilla began his training at the San Luis School of Fine Arts in Saragossa and in 1868 continued at the San Fernando School in Madrid, where he was a pupil of Federico de Madrazo, Carlos de Haes, Carlos Luis de Ribera and Ponciano Ponzano. As a result of these successes, he received numerous commissions not only from Spain and France, but also from America and other European countries. As a portrait painter, his activity was more restricted and with uneven results when he had to deal with effigies of deceased people, but in front of living models he achieved portraits of serene expressiveness and studied and intoned workmanship. However, the most outstanding aspect of his language is the sense of light and atmosphere, under which the tight drawing is softened and blended with the luminous background through small brushstrokes of a color rich in nuances and paste.Francisco Pradilla's work is present in the Prado Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of Bilbao, Buenos Aires, Havana and Sao Paulo, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Christchurch Art Gallery in New Zealand and the Romantic Museum in Madrid, among others.

It presents faults in the arm of the teacher. Measurements: 17 x 33 cm; 39 x 55 cm (frame). A teacher directs the choirboys in his exit of the library, while these load orderly with diverse books of song. Signed, located and dated in the lower right corner. Work reproduced and catalogued in "Francisco Pradilla" by Wilfredo Rincón Garcia, published by Aneto in 1999, nº 89, pages 310 - 311. Measurements: 42 x 74 cm; 69 x 107 cm (frame). Next to the cloister of a church, a young woman wearing a laurel wreath and a satin dress recites a poem in front of a group of enraptured court figures. The attire of royalty, with crowns of gold, brocade and jewels, contrasts with the more humble costumes of the troubadours with their zithers and the families of the theatre world seated next to a stone fountain. Pradilla, with rapid touches, conveys the dreamy attitudes of the different characters and the peaceful atmosphere of a summer afternoon with unrestrained language. Francisco Pradilla began his training as an apprentice to Mariano Pescador and at the San Luis School of Fine Arts in Saragossa. FRANCISCO PRADILLA ORTIZ (Villanueva de Gállego, Zaragoza, 1848 - Madrid, 1921). "Danza de Odaliscas", 1876. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Catalogued in "Francisco Pradilla", Wilfredo Rincón García, Ed. Antiq Varia, p. 102, ref. 15. The piece presents some restorations and is relined. Measurements: 178 x 215 cm; 197 x 238 cm (frame). "Danza de odaliscas" is an outstanding painting in Pradilla's oeuvre. Produced during his period as a pensioner in Rome, years in which he prioritised oriental themes, it stands out for its technical quality, the play of chiaroscuro and compositional dynamism. Although the influence of Fortuny is notable here, Pradilla internalised the Orientalist taste in vogue with the elegance of a genius in order to formulate a language of his own. Six women, illuminated by a side source of warm light that seems to come from a bonfire, wiggle with languid dance steps or sensual gestures, all different. Only one remains seated on the grass. The silver anklets, rhinestone necklaces, slaves and pearls that adorn their hair emphasise the nakedness of their torsos. These adornments and jewels, as well as the brocades and transparent gauze, reveal an unusual mastery of glazes, drawing and the palette, which absorbs shimmer and velvety shifts. The light falls less on the figures in the background, where an undaunted man observes them in the half-light. Their rigidity contrasts with the swaying female bodies. Some have oriental features, but others are European ladies dressed "Moorish-style", as was the custom in Orientalist photography and painting. Graceful dimples light up their smiles. Pradilla frees the odalisques from the harem and brings them together in a natural setting, where their dances are impregnated with ritual enigmas. Francisco Pradilla began his training as an apprentice to Mariano Pescador, and at the San Luis School of Fine Arts in Saragossa. In 1868 he continued his studies at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he was a pupil of Federico de Madrazo and Carlos de Haes. He completed his training during these years by copying works by the great masters of the Prado Museum. In 1874 he won the Drawing Prize of the "Ilustración Española y Americana" and was awarded a scholarship to study in Rome, where he lived for twenty-three years until his appointment as director of the Prado in 1897. In 1878 he took part in the National Exhibition in Madrid and was awarded the Medal of Honour, the same distinction he won that same year at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. As a result of these successes he received numerous commissions not only from Spain and France, but also from America and other European countries. He travelled around Spain and became interested in depicting genre scenes full of grace and colour, always based on an exceptional mastery of drawing. Although he did not hold individual exhibitions, his works took part in exhibitions and competitions in cities all over the world, such as London, Paris, Berlin, São Paulo and Buenos Aires. He was a member of the Royal Academies of San Fernando and San Luis, the French Academy and the Hispanic Society of New York. Among other decorations, he was awarded the Cross of Isabella the Catholic and the Legion of Honour. His work can be found in the Prado Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of Zaragoza, Santander, Havana and São Paulo, the MACBA, the National Library and the Romantic Museum in Madrid, among others.
