Karl Prantl (Austrian, 1923-2010), 1957 meditation sculpture of rectangular form with circular indentions of graduated depths. Signed with incised dot form initials and dated to underside "KP 57". Measures 7 5/8"H x 2 7/8"W x 2 3/8"D (19.8 cm x 7.7 cm x 5.8 cm). Note: according to the artist's daughter, this sculpture was exhibited at the Erker Galerie, St. Gallen, Switzerland, September 13-November 1, 1980. Biography: Karl Prantl is among Austria's most significant sculptors of the Second Republic. He initially studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts before turning to sculpture. In the winter of 1950/51, Prantl created his first sculptures, primarily in limewood. In 1958 he began work at the St. Margarethen stone quarry near the Austria-Hungary border. In the following year he organized the first International Sculptors' Symposium, which represents a vital contribution to the renaissance of stone sculpture and through which Prantl achieved worldwide recognition. Klaus Ihlenfeld (American/German, b. 1934) 20th century abstract carved white marble sculpture, cube form with uniform depth linear circular impressions to the top and to each side, with rounded edges. Signed on base. 8 1/2" H X 8 1/4" W. Biography: Klaus K. Ihlenfeld was born in Berlin. He studied art at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste and completed graduate work with the metal sculptor Hans Uhlmann. He visited the US in 1957 for the first time living in Durham, NC, where he befriended Dr. W. R. Valentiner, the Rembrandt authority and Director of the Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC. Through this friendship in 1960 he met and worked with the metal sculptor Harry Bertoia in Barto, PA. Ihlenfeld joined the Staempfli Gallery in NYC and entered in many group and one-man shows. He has been an Artist-in-Residence in Ogden, Utah; Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia, Penn State University at University Park; the Colorado State University in Denver; and Shippensburg University. He has large commissions at Kutztown University, Pottstown Hospital, and a monumental relief sculpture at the Emigrant Savings Bank in NYC. We wish to thank Mr. Ihlenfeld for confirming to us on 1/19/23 that this is his work. He noted that although he is best known for his bronze sculptures, this was one of only a handful of works he ever executed in marble.

The small-scale work is made of Tauern green serpentine and has a round and dynamic shape. The lively grain of the stone shows green speckles in different sizes. From 1950 onwards, Prantl taught himself how to sculpt. He originally studied painting at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Stone was his favorite material to work with. During a commission work in a quarry, he discovered the sculptural work in the open countryside. This ascetic form of creativity shaped his work sustainably. The Symposium of European Sculptors in St. Margarethen is based on Karl Prantl's initiative. The sculpture is in very good condition and shows hardly any signs of age. It measures 16 cm in height and 23 cm in width. (ggo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
