    Antonio Prats Ventos (Spanish / Dominican Republic, 1925–1999); 'Meninas Series' part polychrome & polished hard wood sculptural figure of a Girl with a natural slant; carved signature to reverse with polychrome above hard wood block stand. Height with block stand 32 inches (81.4 cm.). NOTE: Born in Spain in 1925, Prats Ventos' family moved to the Dominican Republic in 1940 to escape the Spanish Civil War. His first training in arts took place in the Dominican Republic through his participation in the workshops of the Spanish cabinetmaker Pascual Palacios. In 1942 Prats Ventos studied with José Gausachs and Manuel Pascual in the National School of Fine Arts. He devoted himself mainly to sculpture and is known for using a large variety of woods for his works. Prats Ventos participated in group exhibitions in Cuba, Spain, the United States, France, Brazil and the Dominican Republic and his works are held in many public and private collections.

    Large modernist sculpture by Spanish-Dominican artist Antonio Prats Ventos stands over 7 feet tall. Untitled c.1960 Carved wood (possibly walnut). Measures 86" x 17" x 3" From a Palo Alto, CA collection. Aboutthe artist: Antonio Prats Ventos, (Spanish-Dominican 1925-1999), was born in Spain in 1925. His family moved to the Dominican Republic in 1940 to escape the Spanish Civil War. His first training in arts took place in the Dominican Republic through his participation in the workshops of the Spanish cabinetmaker Pascual Palacios. 1942 Prats Ventos studied with José Gausachs and Manuel Pascual in the National School of Fine Arts. He devoted himself mainly to sculpture and is known for using a large variety of woods for his works, but he also used stone, marble, clay and metals to create his sculptures. Prats Ventos was also a painter and draftsman, and designed tapestries and created ceramic murals. In 1946 he participated in the III Biennial of Plastic Arts where he received second place for sculpture. In the 1948 IV Biennial he won the second prize with a work in alabaster. From 1950 to 1969 Prats Ventos was a professor of sculpture at the National School of Fine Arts. From 1967 to 1978 he taught Expression and Design and Decoration at the National University Pedro Henríquez Ureña, where, in 1992, he received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa. Antonio Prats Ventos died in 1999. During his lifetime Prats Ventos received important recognitions and awards in biennials and in national and foreign competitions including: The Order of Civil Merit granted by the King of Spain, the National Prize of Plastic Arts, granted by the Government of the Dominican Republic, and the Order to the Merit of Duarte Sánchez and Mella. Prats Ventos participated in group exhibitions in Cuba, Spain, the United States, France, Brazil and the Dominican Republic and his works are held in many public and private collections. This work was collected from an estate in Palo Alto, CA where it had been displayed for many years. (probably since purchased in the 1960s).
