(Orlovat 1857–1953 Belgrade) A Girl (Angelina, the Artist’s Niece at the Age of 7) with a Book in a Red Armchair, monogrammed in Cyrillic script, dated (18)84, oil on panel, 26 x 21 cm, framed Provenance: Collection Gacanski, Belgrade; Collection of Vladislav Stefanovitch, Novi Sad; Private Collection, Argentina. We are grateful to Dr. Petar Petrović for his scholarly advice. Uroš Predić is regarded as one of the most significant Serbian painters of the 19th and 20th centuries and a leading figure of academic realism. Born on 7 December 1857 in Orlovat, then part of the Austrian Empire (now Serbia), he pursued his artistic education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna between 1876 and 1880, where he was influenced by the traditions of the Vienna Academy and its professors, including Christian Griepenkerl and the principles of Realism. These influences are evident in his meticulous technique and his commitment to achieving lifelike representation. After completing his studies, he initially worked in Vienna before returning to his hometown of Orlovat in 1885. Predić’s oeuvre encompasses portraits, history paintings, and genre scenes, with a particular focus on everyday Serbian life. His works are distinguished by their precise realism and attention to fine detail. He is especially renowned for his portraits of prominent Serbian figures, religious themes, and depictions of rural life. The present painting portrays Predić’s niece, Angelia or Angelina, at the age of seven. She is seated comfortably in a red armchair, holding a book in her hand. Dressed in a white gown adorned with lace and bows, paired with white stockings and black ankle boots, she gazes at the viewer with a contemplative expression. Predić masterfully captures the intricate details of the fabrics, textures, and materials. Warm red tones dominate the colour palette, particularly in the plush upholstered furniture with its decorative fringe, while the girl’s white dress stands in striking contrast. With great sensitivity, the artist conveys an atmosphere of intimacy and domestic tranquillity.
