b. 1851 - d. 1935

(b Harrisburgh, New York 1851; d Germantown, Pennsylvania 1935) American painter. Early in his career, Levi Wells Prentice committed himself to painting the rural landscape of the Adirondack Mountains; near the farm in Lewis County, New York where he was raised. Prentice opened his studio outside New York City in 1875 after teaching himself to paint, and later moved to Brooklyn, New York where he became a member of the Brooklyn Art Association. He was faithful to the landscape genre until his 1884 move to Brooklyn and began painting still life scenes. By 1894 Prentice had moved entirely away from landscapes to focus on his new-found interest in all varieties of still-life objects; his favorite being the apple.
