Georg Primavesi (1774 Heidelberg - 1855 Kassel): The blasted tower at Heidelberg Castle, ruins of a fortification tower, 19th century, Lithography Technique: Lithography on Paper Inscription: Signed in the printing plate below the image: "G. Primavesi del. et sculp.", inscribed in two languages below: "Der gesprengte Thurm auf dem Heidelberger Schlosse | Ruine de la Tour au Chateau de Heidelberg." Date: 19th century Description: The architect Peter Speeth probably left Frankfurt in 1797 and moved to Heidelberg. Here, in 1803, he produced detailed preliminary drawings, which were transferred to print by the engraver Georg Primavesi and published in 1806 under the title "Views of Heidelberg Castle". The strong influence of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, whose Carceri had appeared in the first edition in 1745, is particularly evident in the motifs of the cellars and vaults. From Rome, Piranesi's architectural capriccios influenced an entire generation of architects. He spread elements of Egyptian and Roman-antique architecture, worked with set pieces, simplified and monumentalised the form, elevated architectural drawing to an autonomous art form and led "classical architectural elementary grammar ad absurdum". Speeth's preference for Piranesi manifested itself clearly both in his designs and in his realisations. However, the numerous depictions of the Villa of Maecenas in Tivoli, such as those contained in the series Mahlerisch radirte Prospecte von Italien with works by Johann Christian Reinhart, Jakob Wilhelm Mechau and Albert Christoph Dies, published in 1798, must also have been an inspiration for Speeth. The flooded vaults of Heidelberg Castle thus revive an echo of Roman antiquity that lends the ruins a timeless character. In his etching, Georg Primavesi succeeded in heightening the soft incidence of light in the originals to great effect, thus intensifying the dark stone formations, which now evoke a special atmosphere when illuminated like a stage. The Powder Tower shown here, also known as the Krautturm or Gesprengter Turm, impressively demonstrates the destructive power of gunpowder, which French soldiers detonated in this massive fortification in 1693 during the War of the Palatinate Succession. Two farmers sit peacefully playing music in front of this testimony to the French destructive fury that ravaged the entire Palatinate during this war. Keywords: Castle, palace, ruin, Romanticism, Palatinate War of Succession, French, destruction, 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Germany, Size: Paper: 41,8 cm x 56,0 cm (16,5 x 22 in), Plate: 35,9 cm x 46,0 cm (14,1 x 18,1 in), Depiction: 29,2 cm x 41,7 cm (11,5 x 16,4 in)

Johann Georg Primavesi (1774 Heidelberg - 1855 Kassel): Artists on overgrown ruins, 19th century, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: Signed lower left in the printing plate: "G: Primavesi del:". On the reverse is a sketch of an arm. Date: 19th century Description: The German artist Primavesi was a pen friend of Goethe, with whom he had been in active correspondence not least since his employment as a theatre painter at the Court Theatre in Darmstadt. He is known for a large number of landscapes and prints, many of them with scenery. In the present etching he shows a ruin overgrown by trees with a mighty entrance staircase. Tiny and easy to miss, a seated traveller in a top hat is shown on the right talking to a boy. Next to him are presumably leaning drawing materials that the landscape artist has just put aside.
