    • Mabel (Sarah) Pugh Artist N.C. Watercolor Painting
      Jun. 01, 2024

Mabel (Sarah) Pugh Artist N.C. Watercolor Painting

      Est: $100 - $10,000

Mid 20th Century; Original,12.25” height by 9.5” width. Mabel Pugh (1891-1986), a North Carolina artist known for her woodblock prints and Impressionist paintings, spent most of her artistic career teaching and working in North Carolina. It was while Pugh attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts she was awarded the William Emlen Cresson Memorial Traveling Scholarship in 1919. She used the scholarship to travel to Europe in the summer of 1921 and traveled across Italy, France, and England. It was in July 1921 when she visited Paris, France, and most likely painted this original watercolor of Notre Dame's south and east façades. The French Gothic architecture, with its flying buttresses and rose windows, has made this cathedral an iconic landmark in the city of Paris. Situated along the Seine, Pugh found the perfect spot to paint a scene from everyday French life, just as the Impressionists did in late nineteenth-century Paris. Given Pugh’s brief time abroad, few of her works have a distinct international subject matter. Signed bottom right. Circa 1921. Professionally framed and matted behind glass. Not inspected outside of the frame. Modern frame 19.25” height and 15.25” width. We encourage all interested parties to make an appointment for viewing and inspection of paintings. Please view the photos. Provenance: Estate collection of Mary And Arthur Watts Clark Sr. Durham N.C.

    • Mabel (Sarah) Pugh Artist N.C. White Narcissus Oil Painting
      Jun. 01, 2024

Mabel (Sarah) Pugh Artist N.C. White Narcissus Oil Painting

      Est: $100 - $10,000

Mid 20th Century; Original, 24” height by 18” width Mabel Pugh (1891-1986), renowned North Carolina artist for her woodblock prints and Impressionist paintings, was actively involved in her community. She lived in Morrisville and worked most of her life in the Raleigh area as the head of the art department at Peace College until her retirement in 1960. She was also involved with other North Carolina societies and clubs, such as the North Carolina chapter of the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution which designated Pugh their “official illustrator.” She even designed in 1937 “a map of North Carolina for nature lovers” which depicted stylized places of interest across the state such as the iris garden at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens. She loved her state and its local flora. Perhaps this is why she was inspired to paint White Narcissus, an original still life that depicts white narcissus tazzeta, also known as daffodils, and white and purple irises. These flowers symbolize youthfulness, innocence, and wisdom and in 1935 there were 40,000 irises and 25,000 daffodils at the Duke Gardens. Signed “Mabel Pugh” bottom left. The title White Narcissus is written in pencil on the side of the canvas. Stretched canvas. We encourage all interested parties to make an appointment for viewing and inspection of paintings. Please view the photos. Provenance: Estate collection of Mary And Arthur Watts Clark Sr. Durham N.C.

    • Mabel (Sarah) Pugh Artist N.C. Golden Glow Oil Painting
      Jun. 01, 2024

Mabel (Sarah) Pugh Artist N.C. Golden Glow Oil Painting

      Est: $100 - $10,000

Mid 20th Century; Original, 22” height by 16” width North Carolina artist Mabel Pugh (1891-1986) received much recognition for her art while alive. Her talent for portraits even earned her the recognition of the Library of Congress which acquired her oil portraits of North Carolina congressmen Harold D. Cooley and Herbert Bonner, and now hang in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her original, Golden Glow, appears as an Impressionist-inspired portrait with a young girl dressed in pink and seated in a garden. She appears to be sewing a bonnet and wears her hair in the short bob with a fringe style that was popular in the 1920s. The subject matter of this portrait is very similar to that of American Impressionist Mary Cassatt (1844-1926). Cassatt was known for her images of domestic life, specifically of women and children. Jeune fille au jardin (1880-1882) is one of these, which also depicts a young girl sewing in a garden and was shown at the 1886 Impressionist group’s exhibit. Given that Pugh and Cassatt studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (Pugh ca. 1915-1919, Cassatt ca. 1860-1864), and Cassatt’s fame, undoubtedly Pugh was inspired by Cassatt and was aware of her work. According to Mary Cannon Clark, a curator from the St. John’s Museum of Art (now Cameron Art Museum) in Wilmington, NC told her this “portrait of a young girl in a field of flowers in sunlight” was painted while Pugh studied in Paris. Indeed, Pugh was awarded the William Emlen Cresson Memorial Traveling Scholarship in 1919 and traveled to Paris in 1921 to study art. Not signed on the front. Circa 1921. On the verso in cursive: “Golden Glow by Mabel Pugh Price 150.00 Oil on Canvas.” After inspection, the title was written clearer on the edge of the canvas as “Golden Glow.” This painting most likely was a gift to Clark from Pugh as indicated by the signed ARTNews card found in the frame. Antique frame 24.75” height and 19.5” width. Artist signed card 4.75” height and 3.25” width. We encourage all interested parties to make an appointment for viewing and inspection of paintings. Please view the photos. Provenance: Estate collection of Mary And Arthur Watts Clark Sr. Durham N.C.
