    A. W. N. PUGIN (1812-1852) OR E. W. PUGIN (1834-1875) NEEDLEWORK WOOL PANEL, CIRCA 1850 wool, with later linen backing, with later cotton binding to each end, the panel a section of a larger carpet 222cm x 111.5cm Provenance: St. Leonards - Mayfield Chapel, Mayfield, Sussex, England. Between 1863 and 1866, Edward Welby Pugin converted the remains of a medieval palace, once owned by the Archbishops of Canterbury, into Mayfield School of the Holy Child. One significant work from this time is a needlework carpet or runner that covered the entire Chapel floor. Due to its large size, the rug was made in small sections and then stitched together. It was hand-sewn by the sisters of Mayfield Chapel for Mother Cornelia Connelly, the founder of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. Pugin likely used decorative designs created by his father, as he did in other projects.

    Attributed to A W N Pugin (1812-1852),

    Est: £1,000 - £2,000

Attributed to A W N Pugin (1812-1852), Attributed to A W N Pugin (1812-1852), a pair of large cast iron rainwater corner hoppers, both with crenulated detailing, each dated '1844 'in relief, 112cm high 45cm wide (2) Provenance: The Palace of Westminster (1844-1980). Pugin initially worked with Barry on designs for the Palace of Westminster in 1836 and 1837, but then was not involved again until June 1844; see Alexandra Wedgwood. 'The New Palace Westminster' in Paul Atterbury and Clive Wainwright (eds), 'Pugin', London, 1994, p.223. The date on the rainwater hoppers makes it not unlikely that they are to a Pugin design, but in the apparent absence of further documentation, it is not possible to be certain. Identical rainwater hoppers survive on parts of the Palace to this day, catching water from the old and rusting guttering. The water flows down equally deteriorating cast iron pipes, sometimes through 'corner' hoppers such as these, directly into the stonework. Leaks are causing severe internal damage and remedial work is part of the ongoing restoration covering the whole of the parliamentary estate. For a rectangular rainwater hopper (dated 1845) and a corner example (dated 1844) in situ, see a short video: 'Palace of Westminster: Making the building watertight' at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Palace_of_Westminster_-_Making_the_building_watertight.webm (scroll to 2:42 minutes).

VICTORIAN ARTIST'S JEWEL, CIRCA 1850 gold and enamel, bears inscription CONSIDER THE LILIES (4cm diameter) Literature: Gere C. and Munn G., Artists' Jewellery Pre-Raphaelite to Arts and Crafts, ACC, 1989, p.35, pl.15, for an illustration of a similar brooch, without the inscription, held in the collection of The Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery and purchased by the museum along with other jewellery from an exhibition held at Bingley Hall in 1886. The names of the individual manufacturers were not recorded however the note states that the design history of these very distinctive jewels remains speculative, but they certainly stem from the inspiration of considerable talent of the order of A.W.N. Pugin or William Burges. Another example of this brooch was given by Pugin to his third wife Jane Knill (Christie's London, April 16, 2013, Lot 204.) Note: The original drawing and a tracing of this brooch survive in the Hardman archive, held at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. The Birmingham brooch and its design drawing were exhibited at Birmingham Gold & Silver 1773-1973, at the City Museum, 28th July-16th September 1973, cat. C54, where it was attributed to John Hardman Powell.

A.W.N. PUGIN (1812-1852) (ATTRIBUTED DESIGNER), POSSIBLY FOR GILLOWS GROUP OF SIX SIDE CHAIRS, CIRCA 1860 oak, with close-nailed leather upholstery, the top rail carvings representing fruiting vines; flowering foliage; thistles; convolvulus; ivy; flowering currants (50cm wide, 88.5cm high, 49cm deep) Qty: (6) Provenance: Temple Three Paper Buildings, London Footnote: Note: The Paper Buildings comprise a set of barrister’s chambers situated within the Inner Temple area in London. Initially built in 1609, the name refers to the construction materials used in the buildings, a combination of timer, lath and plaster, known as ‘paperwork’. In 1819 Robert Smirke was surveyor of the buildings; his only work in London that was executed in the Gothic Revival style, notable rooms include the Library and the Great Hall. However, the buildings’ history was plagued by a number of fires which destroyed large portions of Smirke’s work. The Library and Great Hall were rebuilt by Smirke’s brother Sydney in 1870, very much in the Gothic aesthetic; today the paper buildings resemble a far more modern aesthetic, with elements of neo-classical architecture after further renovations in the 1950s. The present set of six chairs, originally with green leather upholstery, certainly bear similarities with much of the seating produced for the Palace of Westminster, namely the chamfered square legs with recessed H-stretchers, completed in oak. The chairs each bear a distinct carving along the top rail and while Pugin’s designs were generally dominated by plain and solid construction, designs for the Palace of Westminster often featured more elaborate embellishments and intricately carved details. In 2006, a pair of X-frame side chairs, attributed to Pugin for the Palace of Westminster, feature similar carvings of oak leaves and acorns; a dining chair for the Speaker’s House, on display in The Metropolitan Museum in New York, also displays similarly carved flowering foliage (accession 2015.638). A chair matching the design of the present lot, carved with holly on the top rail with original green leather upholstery, still resides at the Three Paper Buildings Barristers in London today.

A.W.N. PUGIN (1812-1852) OR E.W. PUGIN (1834-1875) NEEDLEWORK CARPET, CIRCA 1850 wool, with hessian backing (384cm x 95cm) Provenance: St. Leonards - Mayfield Chapel, Mayfield, Sussex, England. Footnote: Note: The remains of a medieval palace belonging to the Archbishops of Canterbury was converted into a school, Mayfield School of the Holy Child, by Edward Welby Pugin in 1863-6. This needlework rug originally ran the entire length of the Chapel. Due to the sheer scale of the work, the rug was constructed in small, panelled sections and later stitched together to form the carpet. Hand-stitched by the sisters of Mayfield Chapel, the carpet was produced for Mother Cornelia Connelly, founder of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. The border has verses from Psalm 112 verses 5 and 6 ET HUMILIA RESPICIT IN CAELO ET IN TERRA/ SUSCITANS A TERRA INOPEM ET DE STERCORE ERIGENS PAUPEREM, translating from Latin as 'Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice/ Raising up the needy from the earth, and lifting up the poor out of the dunghill'. As in other projects, E.W. Pugin continued to use the decorative designs of his father of which this may be one.
