Hans Purrmann View of the Villa Bitthäuser, Florence. 1942

        Est: €60,000 - €80,000

Hans Purrmann 1880 Speyer - 1966 Basel View of the Villa Bitthäuser, Florence. 1942 Signed "H. Purrmann" lower right. Oil auf canvas. 76 x 61 cm. Framed (89 x 74 cm). Exil in Italien, 1933-1945, Bde. I-II, Stuttgart 1989, S.25f.). Werkverzeichnis: Lenz/Billeter 1942/14, Archiv-Nr. 698 provenance: Dr. Lucas Lichtenhan, Basel / Private owner, South Germany

Hans Purrmann, Landschaft bei Langenargen, 1923

        Est: €25,000 - €30,000

Signed 'H. Purrmann' in black lower right. The painting is registered in the Hans Purrmann Archive under the number 1402. We would like to thank Felix Billeter, Hans Purrmann Archive, Munich, for the kind information. This charming landscape painting was created in 1923 in Langenargen on Lake Constance, where Hans Purrmann had purchased a fisherman's house directly on the lake in 1919. At the beginning of the 1920s, Purrmann commuted between the metropolis of Berlin and the tranquil, peaceful town of Langenargen, where he usually spent the summer months. Away from the hustle and bustle of Berlin, he created numerous landscapes here in radiant colours and a light, almost fluid painting style. Like "Garten der Villa Romana" (Lot 44, Lempertz Auction 1247, 4 June 2024), the painting on offer comes from the estate of Elisabeth Heintz, Purrmann's long-time secretary and close confidante during his time in Ticino.

Hans Purrmann, Garten der Villa Romana, 1941

        Est: €60,000 - €80,000

Signed 'H. Purrmann' in black lower right. Like so many avant-garde artists, the painter Hans Purrmann felt the effects of the Nazi regime early on. However, he had the good fortune to be able to leave Germany in 1935 to become the voluntary head of the Deutscher Künstlerbund’s “Villa Romana” foundation and spend the following years in Florence. Purrmann would ultimately live and work in this city of the Renaissance for eight formative years – secure in the magnificent country villa in the Via Senese and surrounded by befriended artists like Gerhard Marcks, Emy Roeder and Rudolf Levy. This period was defined by optimism and melancholy, losses and triumphs, but – above all – by his many boldly colourful paintings filled with light. The location alone of his new home in the south of Florence on a hill beyond the Porta Romana made it exceptional. Purrmann repeatedly painted the view of the splendid city and park-like gardens as seen from his privileged dwelling. His landscapes took on a previously unknown intensity of colour and sense of depth there. In the magnificent painting “Garten der Villa Romana” from 1941, he has focused his gaze on the park’s majestic broadleaved tree, which is flanked by conifers to its left and the villa built in 1904/1905 to its right. Beginning with the light foreground of the lawn, he has built up the composition in varied shades of green, which finally come up against the narrow blue passage of the sky. The landscape is immersed in the radiant light of a summer day – the leaves, the oleander shrub in the front garden and, not least, the terracotta-coloured façade of the villa seem to reflect the rays of the sun. Applying the paint thinly at some points and in an impasto at others, Purrmann composed a peaceful, Mediterranean park landscape – in the middle of the Second World War. This painting is from the estate of Elisabeth Heintz (1911-1966): she was Purrmann’s secretary and close confidante for many years during his Ticino period, and he bequeathed her a number of works.

Despite this success, he moved to Paris in 1906, where he soon joined the circle of the "Domiers", named after their favourite café du Dôme and grouped around the patron of the arts Wilhelm Uhde. At Gertrude Stein's house, he made the acquaintance of Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Together with the latter, he established the "Académie Matisse". After Hitler came to power, Purrmann's art was ostracised as "degenerate".

        Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Signed 'H. Purrmann' in green lower right. Szklarska Poręba, formerly known as Schreiberhau, is a small Lower Silesian town in the Giant Mountains, not far from Wrocław. In 1934 Hans Purrmann went there to visit the art historian, writer and collector Dr Johannes Guthmann (1876-1956), who was a friend of the family of Gerhart Hauptmann and had been living near them since the early 1920s. The charming highland landscape inspired Purrmann to create a number of paintings that year. Purrmann and Guthmann, who was from a wealthy family, had already met in Berlin in 1916. Guthmann subsequently purchased a large number of the artist’s works. Along with Josef Kohl-Weigand, who was a generation younger, Johannes Guthmann was among the most important private collectors of Purrmann’s work, and the two also shared a passion for the art of Max Slevogt.

        Dec. 01, 2023

Hans Purrmann, Küstenlandschaft bei Sorrent, 1923

        Est: €40,000 -

Signed 'H. Purrmann' in black lower right. Travel was an important and constant element in the life of Hans Purrmann – beginning with his first journey through France with Henri Matisse in 1908. Over the following decades, Purrmann not only lived in France, Italy and Switzerland, he also regularly travelled round these countries. His stays left their mark in the form of numerous paintings capturing the sun-filled beauty of southern European landscapes in all their variety. In the spring and summer months of each year between 1922 and 1924, Purrmann travelled with his family to Sorrento on the Gulf of Naples and to Rome. In the area around Sorrento he painted views of the rocky coast: through variations in his perspective as well as lighting and weather conditions, he fully savoured the special character of this landscape not just as a motif but also in terms of colour. A harmoniously rounded bay situated in front of a spit of land offered an interesting landscape formation for his “Küstenlandschaft bei Sorrent” from 1923 (Lot 61). The cresting waves moving towards the beach show the Mediterranean in gentle motion while the white rock pushed to the front establishes a striking counterpoint. The shimmering atmosphere of a summer day’s light becomes palpable in the innumerable nuances of colour in the sky and landscape. The motif of “Uferlandschaft bei Hendaye” (Lot 56) lies at the southernmost point of France’s Atlantic coast, at the border with Spain; Purrmann and his wife travelled there in 1929. Hendaye is seen from the east, viewed from a spit of land across the bay, with the Basque mountain range of Jaizkibel rising up in the background. The painter presumably set up his easel at a bend in the hiking trail there; the slender trees rising up on the left in the picture lead our eyes over to the expansive landscape panorama which opens up before us. This work is defined by a delicate, light-filled palette; Purrmann realised the same view once again in a boldly coloured, semi-abstract version (cf. Lenz/Billeter 1929/16). From October 1935 the artist lived in Florence, where he had been made responsible for the administration of the German artists’ foundation of the Villa Romana. During the following years, his time in Florence was overshadowed by the Nazi denunciation of his art as “degenerate” and the repeated consideration of his dismissal from the foundation. Hitler visited Florence in 1938, and Purrmann was placed in custody while he was there. No sign of these difficulties can be recognised in his works from this period. In “San Francesco di Paola bei Florenz” (Lot 57) the characteristic Tuscan landscape rises up strikingly in an abundant variety of extremely diverse shades of green. In the middle of the picture, nestled between cypresses, pines and fruit trees, stands the Villa di San Francesco di Paola, and the low-lying sun has set its walls aglow in a light pink and orange. This former monastery from the 16th century was converted into a private villa in the 18th century. In 1874 the German sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand purchased this estate to the south of Florence, receiving illustrious guests such as Richard and Cosima Wagner, Arnold Böcklin, Johannes Brahms and Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary over the next three decades.
