PURSELL, Weimer (American, 1906 - 1974). When You Ride Alon...

        Est: $800 - $1,200

PURSELL, Weimer (American, 1906 - 1974). When You Ride Alone You Ride with Hitler / Join a Car Sharing Club Today! Washington D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1943. Lithograph. The extensive mobilization for World War II led to an unprecedented government initiative aimed at encouraging the public to conserve resources vital to the war effort. The federal government was especially focused on conserving rubber domestically after the Japanese military severed access to rubber plantations in Southeast Asia. Gasoline rationing was implemented as a strategy to limit vehicle use, particularly as automobile ownership and usage had reached unprecedented levels in the United States. Drawing inspiration from Art Deco, Cubism, and emerging modernist movements of the time, Pursell created numerous posters and advertisements, particularly for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the 1930s and 1940s. Frame 28 ¼ x 22 ¼”; view 27 ¾ x 21 ¾”. Original folds, else very good. Not examined outside frame.

Original Vintage WWII Poster When You Ride Alone You Ride with Hitler Weimer Pursell 1943

        Est: $1,800 - $2,400

This dramatic and interestingly designed poster highlights the importance of ride sharing to reduce the need for new tires, as rubber was in high demand during the war. It was all part of an effort to involve citizens in the war effort. This was their opportunity to pitch in and help the national cause at a local level. During both of the World Wars, the idea that an individual could make a difference with their efforts was nurtured and developed. During WWII, posters played an important role in developing a sense of motivation and patriotism. Weimer Pursell (1906-1974) was as an illustrator for Life, Esquire, and Forbes magazines, among many others. In posters, he produced American Art Deco style designs for Coca-Cola, American Airlines, Standard Oil, the Chicago World's Fair and more, although his work is extremely hard to find on the market today. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Condition B: extensive repaired tears, creases and overpainting in margins and image, affecting text; horizontal fold. Framed. A rare poster for the Chicago World's Fair ("A Century of Progress") not advertising the fair itself, but an individual attraction within it. Drawing 38 million visitors, the Chicago World's Fair was the first of America's "Great Fairs of the Depression." During those economically dire times "fairs offered the illusion of better times, an escapism similar to, but more tangible than, Hollywood's palliatives" (World's Fair p. 15). Recalling the self-promotional posters of Buffalo Bill and the extravagant claims of American circus posters, this image promises a spectacle of amazing proportions including vehicles of all types, animals, historical recreations and a "company of 200 persons!" The 1939 New York World's Fair had a similar pageant, "Railroads on Parade." Although unsigned, the poster bears the bright colors and aesthetic style of other Chicago World's Fair posters designed by Weimer Pursell, backed up by the existence of a 1933 flyer for the same event, featuring the same image with slightly different text, signed by Pursell.

DESCRIPTION: Never has a solo car ride been so horrifying. But when it comes to propaganda posters, it’s all about harnessing fear to drive results. In this case, Pursell uses the threat of Hitler riding shotgun to incite Americans to save gasoline by joining a car-sharing club. Car ownership was a fairly new enjoyment for Americans, so convincing the public to change their habits was an issue perfectly suited to posters like this one. Plus, as Pursell intones, not rationing was akin to betraying your country. (War & Propaganda; Automobiles; American)

Abstracted skyscrapers, shop windows, traffic-filled streets and the hustle-and-bustle of New York City life are all represented in this high energy street scene - exemplary of classic American graphic Modernism. Pursell designed several highly-regarded posters for the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, as well as World War II propaganda posters (most memorably, "When You Ride Alone You Ride With Hitler!") and an image for Winchester Rifles. This figurative representation is reminiscent in color and style of Erik Nitsche's 1947 poster, Say It Fast . . . Often . . . In Color / Subway Posters. Airways p. 119.

WINCHESTER - RABBIT ORIGINAL VINTAGE HUNTING POSTER BY WEIMAR PURSELL

        Est: $900 - $1,200

This vintage poster was made to advertise Winchester rifles by displaying game in its natural habitat, in this case a rabbit. It was one of a series of four posters designed by graphic artist Weimer Pursell who was as an illustrator for Life, Esquire, and Forbes, among others. In posters, he produced American Art Deco style designs for Coca-Cola, American Airlines, Standard Oil, the Chicago World's Fair and more, although his work is extremely rare to find today. The other posters in this series depicted a rabbit, a deer, and a pheasant. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Neely Printing Co., [Chicago.] Condition B+ / B: repaired tears, creases and overpainting along vertical and horizontal folds; foxing and time-staining in image. Pursell designed several posters for the Chicago World's Fair. This image is the most dramtic, depicting the three towers of the Federal Building (representing the branches of government) jutting up into the text. The vibrant colors in Pursell's design may well have been representative of the neon lights that lit up the fairgrounds at night. Thirty-nine million visitors came to the fair during the two years it was open. Resnick 16, World of Tomorrow p. 19.
