Robert Lorraine Pyne New York, (1836 - 1905) Harlem, 1889 landscape oil on canvas signed, dated and titled lower left. Restoration patch upper center. Biography from the Archives of askART: Landscape painter of New York City, 1856-1860. Robert Pyne exhibited views of the Catskills and Berkshires of New York and Massachusetts at the National Academy of Design, 1861-1897. Like many of the Hudson River School he helped to establish a true painting tradition in the United States. Pyne is most known for his beautiful sunset scenes that are very reminiscent of the European romantic landscape and by an almost religious reverence for the magnificence of the American wilderness. Listed: Cowdrey National Academy of Design NYBD, 1859-1860 Exhibited: National Academy of Design, 1861-1897 Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1883-1890 Art Institute of Chicago, 1896, 1899 Source: www.roughtongalleries.com Roughton Galleries, Dallas, Texas Courtesy to AskART from Brian Roughton
