        Nov. 14, 2023

MANOLO QUEJIDO (Seville, 1946). "Rehearsal". Mixed technique on silk. This piece belongs to the Kimono Joya collection.

        Est: €3,000 - €3,500

MANOLO QUEJIDO (Seville, 1946). "Essay". Mixed media on silk. This piece belongs to the Kimono Joya collection. Size: 38 x 39 cm; 53 x 53 cm (frame). This work belongs to the exhibition project entitled "Treasures on silk. Oriental daydreams", created by Fumiko Negishi and Carlos Muñiz. The project not only comprised an exhibition of 30 Haoris intervened by various artists from the international contemporary art scene, but was accompanied by a set of 10 Tanka poems by Junko Okawara, objects of Wabi Sabi philosophy and action painting. In the creation of this collection, the inspiration of the exhibition entitled "Kimono Joya, Wabi Sabi the beauty of imperfection" has been fundamental. This exhibition was created on the basis of an artistic project of national and international recognition: Kimono -joya; which after having been exhibited in several cities in Spain and Japan, was presented in the Matadero hall in Madrid in 2023. Each of the artists created their artistic design based on the traditional Japanese garment known as Haori. Each of the works presents a reduced T-shaped format, following the idea of idealising the miniature, a concept that harmonises with oriental philosophy. The material itself transports the viewer to the trade routes between East and West and to the natural exchange that is the basis for the enrichment of a profound knowledge. The Haori, as a cultural identity, has been intervened by each artist in a personal way and serves in this case as a catalyst for this exchange and a canvas for the personal vision of each of the artists who have participated in this project. Manolo Quejido is considered to be one of the most outstanding artists of the generation that practised the new figuration. He was an integral member of the Nueva Figuración Madrileña and a pioneer in the use of computers for creative purposes in Spain. His painting moves between the everyday and the monumental, and is characterised by a vibrant chromaticism charged with a vital and festive joy. His artistic production, in which he adopts an ironic and provocative attitude, draws from the figurative tradition, which he resolves in large formats with large areas of colour and gestural brushstrokes. In 1997 the IVAM Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno organised the exhibition "Manolo Quejido. 33 years in resistance", in which more than a hundred of his works could be seen. He has taken part in numerous individual and group exhibitions, including the one held at IVAM, "Manolo Quejido. 33 years in resistance", in which more than a hundred of his works could be seen. His work forms part of museums and public collections such as Artium Centro-Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporáneo (Vitoria), CAAC Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (Seville), IVAM Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (Valencia) or MNCARS Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid).

MANOLO QUEJIDO, (Seville, 1946). Untitled. Bronze sculpture. Series of 12. Provenance: Varron Gallery, Salamanca. Size: 8 x 18 x 20 cm. Manolo Quejido is an artist and graphic designer who became known during the period known as the New Madrilenian Figuration. His beginnings in the mid-seventies were focused on the defence of pictorial figuration, although with the advance of time and the need for experimentation and creation, he also explored new artistic terrains, being one of the pioneers in the use of computers for creative purposes in Spain, as well as the application of mathematical and sequential models in the Calculation Centre, investigating a geometric and technified work, which goes from Op Art to cybernetics. Subsequently, his evolution moved towards Pop Art and neo-expressionism, without forgetting his political and social commitment. In the early eighties he became interested in the origins of 20th century painting, studying in depth the work of Matisse, Picasso and Cézanne, American painting and some old masters, with an emphasis on Velázquez. It is at this time that his work is invaded by a palette of bright and carefree colours, giving life to vibrant brushstrokes. His works form part of public and private collections such as the National Library, the Basque Government, the "la Caixa" Foundation in Barcelona, the IVAM in Valencia, the Marugame Hirai Museum in Kagawa (Japan) and the MACBA in Barcelona.

MANOLO QUEJIDO (Seville, 1946). "I Love Mallorca 46", 1989. Oil on canvas. Work exhibited in the Buades Gallery (Madrid). Work reproduced in the Catalogue "Manolo Quejido I love Mallorca". Buades Gallery, 1990. Signed, dated and titled on the back. Provenance: private collection conceived since the 70's between London and Madrid. Measurements: 127 x 175 cm. This work belongs to the series I love Mallorca, which was presented at the Buades Gallery in Madrid in May 1990. The works in the series centre the image on an interior that can be seen through an opening that opens in the centre towards the landscape. In this case the theme is centred on the figure of the painter and the model, a recurring theme in the artistic tradition. The influence of Matisse is evident in the conception of the model's bodily forms, as well as a small nod to Warhol in the silhouette of the flower that appears in the scene. Manolo Quejido is considered one of the most outstanding artists of the generation that practised the new figuration. He was an integral member of the Nueva Figuración Madrileña and a pioneer of the use of computers for creative purposes in Spain. MANOLO QUEJIDO (Seville, 1946). "Nudes", 1980. Oil on cardboard adhered to board. Signed and dated 2-7-80, in the upper left-hand corner. Provenance: acquired by the parents of the present owner, directly from the artist. Measurements: 100 x 70 cm; 109 x 80 cm (frame). He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the one held at IVAM, "Manolo Quejido.

MANOLO QUEJIDO (Seville, 1946). "Maquina Regina", 1992. Acrylic on cardboard volume. Unique work. Signed on the back. Measurements: 40 x 41,8 x 24,8 cm. Manolo Quejido has dedicated a large part of his work to the Regina typewriters. In fact, the Reina Sofía Museum and Art Centre in Madrid has two pieces in its collection; an acrylic on cardboard from 1978, and a sculpture from 1946 entitled Maquina sentada en silla. In this particular case the artist oscillates between the two pieces in the Reina Sofía, moving away from painting and not arriving at the reality of the object.
