ALPHONSE LEON QUIZET (1885-1955) Landscape with The Canal Saint-Martin Oil on panel signed lower right - measures 7.25" x 9.5" Hammer Galleries Stamp Verso A Painter born in Paris, self-taught by copying old masters in the Louvre, Alphonse Quizet first exhibited at the Salons de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, des Indépendants and d'Automne in in 1903. He adored the picturesque and sentimental idea of the rustic Parisian suburbs, and painted the Canal Saint-Martin, the Pré-Saint-Gervais, Belleville and the banks of the Marne. Maurice Utrillo, a close childhood friend credits Quizet for helping him begin to paint, and was drawn to the same quiet and solitary places to paint that Quizet preferred. Utrillo considered Quizet his mentor and advisor, and they both shared a tenacious existential passion and dedication to painting.

Note: Quizet was a firmly Parisian painter, with his oeuvre consisting almost entirely of views of the city, and particularly the district of Montmartre, of which the present work is a particularly charming example. He studied painting at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and was closely associated with Marcel Leprin (1891-1933) and Louis Valtat (1869-1952). He was heavily influenced by the work of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), as is evident in the loose and unblended brushstrokes of the present work, and in turn shaped the approach of his contemporary Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), whose compositions exhibit a striking similarity to Quizet's paintings.

CONTACT US SKU#: 124620 US Shipping $49 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Alphonse Quizet was born on March 13th,1885 in Paris. He regularly exhibited his work in the Salons of the National of Fine Arts, in the Salons of the Independent Painters, and in the Salon of Automn.He is one of those painters attached to depict the sentimental pictures that can be found in the early twentieth century country style outskirts of Paris. The titles of his paintings reflect this tendency: Le Moulin de la Galette, Montmartre. He is all devoted to Montmartre. There he painted: La Basilique and La Rue Saint Andre del Sarte. There he met Maurice Utrillo, and became his master.Utrillo enjoyed Quizet style so much that he started to paint the same subjects, using the same colors and techniques. Their work is very similar, and it happened that one sees Quizet, and says: "What a beautiful Utrillo". Quizet was also linked with Marcel Leprin, another Montmarte painter and to Louis Valtat, the famous Fauve painter. In 1943 he painted five large decorative panels for the wedding room of the town hall of Pre Saint Gervais. He was awarded the medal of Chevalier de la Legion d' Honneur.
