He graduated from the University of Bucharest in 1935 and came to the U.S. in 1939 as a member of the Romanian Art Commission in connection with the New York World's Fair. In addition to his career as a fine artist, Racz was a professor of painting and sculpture at Columbia University from 1951 to 1983, at which point he was named a Professor Emeritus and was awarded a Bancroft Distinguished Retired Teacher award. He divided his spare time between his homes in New Nersey and Vinalhaven, Maine, where he found great inspiration in natural flora and fauna of the Fox Island surroundings. He had numerous solo exhibitions in Europe, South America, and the United States, and the Museum of Modern Art purchased over two dozen of his prints. Among his awards were the Guggenheim fellowship in printmaking in 1956 and a Fullbright scholar grant to study in Chile in 1957. Est: -

Andre Racz "Boy With Orange" Drypoint Etching. Andre Racz (b.1916-d.1994): One of America's most influential artists of the post 1950's era, Andre Racz was actually born and raised in Romania and studied art at the University of Bucharest where he received his BA in 1935. He moved permanently to New York in 1939 and became an American citizen in 1948. He completed his artistic education there at both the New School for Social Research and at the renowned Atelier 17 (1943-45). Under the direction of Stanley William Hayter, Atelier 17 became the focal point for avant guarde printmaking. At this early date its two most controversial young artists were Andre Racz and Mauricio Lasansky who both created prints that elaborated upon Picasso's savagely distorted and anguished imagery. One author writes, "In the mid 1940's, Andre Racz created expressive and shocking imagery, but was not yet free from the influences of Picasso and Hayter. ... Andre Racz and Mauricio Lasansky worked their way through such transitional stages until Picasso's influence on them waned and their prints displayed the highly personal and mature characteristics that made them, in turn, influential printmakers." Boy with an Orange is an exquisite example of Andre Racz's mature art. Few artists have the ability to capture such warmth and expression with so few lines. Conveying so much through so little is the key to his artistic genius. Many of Andre Racz's etchings are not numbered. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Andre Racz not only etched his plates but printed them himself. He thus chose not to number his engraved work in specific editions. This particular print was published in an edition of one hundred. In New York, Racz studied with Hayter at Atelier 17 and produced many prints, inluding a number of portfolios throughout the 1940s and 1950s. In the mid 1940s his expressive and shocking imagery was not yet free from the influences of Picasso and Hayter; the slumped over and decapitated head of Medusa, at the feet of the fierce Perseus resonates with the savagery seen in Picasso's work from the previous decade.
