Savo Radulovic Yugoslavian, 1911-1991 Man Mopping His Brow, c. 1935 lithograph signed and titled 14 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches Other Notes: Savo Radulovic was known for his stylized paintings of regional scenes and gritty industrial factories and laborers. He was born in Yugoslavia and came to the United States at age 11. After a series of jobs working in a coal mine and an automobile factory, Radulovic settled in St. Louis. He became friends with Tanasko Milovich, who encouraged him to study art. He attended night classes at the School of Fine Arts, Washington University with Fred Conway and Fred Carpenter, and in 1937, won a Carnegie Scholarship for study at the Fogg Museum of Art at Harvard University. Radulovic's work was shown in exhibitions at the St. Louis Art Museum, Joslyn Museum, Omaha, NE; St. Louis Artists' Guild; Midtown Gallery, St. Louis; ACA Galleries NYC. Radulovic owned Little Bohemia, a tavern and gallery on the riverfront which was a haven for the creative people of St. Louis. Paintings by St. Louis artists covered the walls of his establishment. He was forced to move his business to the Grand and Franklin Avenue artist's colony when wrecking for the riverfront memorial began. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Radulovic enlisted in the army and served as a War Department combat artist in North Africa, Italy, and Yugoslavia. When he returned, he lived in New York City where he continued to draw and paint. His paintings may be found in the collections of the St. Louis Art Museum; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; and the National Gallery of Modern Art, Rome. He is the only American artist represented in the National Gallery of Yugoslavia. Thirty-nine of his combat paintings hang in the Pentagon.
