HENRY MACBETH-RAEBURN RA (SCOTTISH 1860 - 1947) DR NATHANIEL SPENS, AFTER SIR HENRY RAEBURN RA (SCOTTISH 1756 - 1823) mezzotint, signed in pencil and Artist's ‘Proof in progress’ 90.5cm x 63cm (including frame) This progress proof was shown as Henry Macbeth-Raeburn's Diploma Work in the RA Summer Exhibition of 1933 (cat. no. 1337; reprod. The Royal Academy illustrated, 1933, p. 5). Macbeth-Raeburn, who had been elected as an Associate Engraver in July 1922 and full Academician on 14 February 1933, was well-known for his mastery of mezzotint in the eighteenth-century manner, and particularly so for his prints after portraits by Henry Raeburn RA, examples of which he had regularly exhibited at the Academy since 1909. Raeburn's original painting of Dr Nathaniel Spens, a celebrated amateur archer, was commissioned in 1793 by the Royal Company of Archers (the King's Bodyguard for Scotland), in whose collection it remains.

Biography from the Archives of askART: Sir Henry Raeburn was born on March 4, 1756 in Stockbridge, Scotland near Edinburgh. He was a Scottish miller's son whose idealized aristocrats, always gentle and charming, seem to pose in perpetual twilight. He began his career as a miniaturist. In 1778, after marrying into comfortable circumstances, he visited London where he met Reynolds. In 1785 he went to Italy, where he remained for two years. On his return to Edinburgh he became the most important Scottish painter of the century, his career in many ways paralleling that of Reynolds. In 1811 he was elected President of the Royal Society of Artists and in 1815, a Royal Academician. He was knighted by George IV in 1822, when the sovereign was visiting Scotland. Art was a business to this most distinguished of Scotch painters, and from 9 AM to 5:30 PM it kept him regularly in his studio, where he painted a succession of three to four sitters a day. He painted directly on canvas without preliminary sketches, achieving a kind of spontaneity. When he left his easel, it was to speculate in real estate or to play golf. Raeburn died in Edinburgh on July 8, 1823. Written and submitted by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California. Sources include: Masterpieces of Art, Catalogue of the New York World's Fair 1940.

Sir Henry Raeburn United Kingdom, Scotland, (1756 - 1823) Portrait of Mr. Clavering oil on board Artist and title label verso, 107Q catalog. Jeffrey Bell; With Wallis & Son, 1910; Hon. Sir Ewan Charteris (1864-1940); Guy Bolton, his sale, Sotheby's, 7th November 1956, lot 55, bt. Charles Robertson, Combe Hay Manor; Sotheby's, London, 26th March 2004, lot 30 Exhibited: Glasgow International Exhibition, 1901, no.79 Literature: Sir Walter Armstrong, Sir Henry Raeburn, 1901, p. 96; James Grieg, Sir Henry Raeburn, RA: His Life and Works, 1911, p. 38; David Mackie, Raeburn, Life and Art, doctoral thesis, 1993, vol. II, pp. 174-175, no. 42b, as 'part replica' Footnote: George Joseph Bell was born in Edinburgh, the son of William Bell. He became advocate in 1791 and devoted himself to the study of Scottish mercantile law. In 1804, he published his Treatise on the Laws of Bankruptcy in Scotland (1804) which came to be regarded as one of the leading legal textbooks of his day. In 1822, Bell was appointed Professor of Scots Law at Edinburgh University, and in 1832 became one of the four principal clerks of sessions. He later chaired the Royal Commission for the amendment of Scottish Law which led to the Scottish Bankruptcy Act of 1839. The sitter's younger brother, Sir Charles Bell (1774-1842), the distinguished surgeon, was also painted by Raeburn. In 1805, Bell married Barbara Shaw who herself sat to Raeburn in 1810. The present painting relates to the larger, three-quarter length portrait of the sitter (126 x 100cm), painted by Raeburn in 1816, when Bell was appointed Professor of Conveyancing to the Society of Writers to the Signet. That portrait was presented to Parliament House by his son, Dr C W Bell in 1856 and was last recorded in a private collection in Washington, D. C. (see Mackie, pp. 173-174, no. 42).
