              Nov. 17, 2023

An important micromosaic panel "Veduta delle cascate a Tivoli"

              Est: €50,000 - €60,000

This panel, which is framed by a fine black border with a golden meander in micromosaic, may have been inspired by a motif by Jakob Philipp Hackert. Giacomo Raffaelli (1753 - 1836) is considered the inventor of the micromosaic technique and was its most famous exponent. It is assumed that he came from a family that produced enamel paints for the mosaic workshops of the Vatican. Napoleon ordered him to Milan to run a mosaic workshop in 1804. During this time he created some famous mosaics, such as a copy of Leonardo's Last Supper of the same dimensions. Raffaelli moved back to Rome between 1817 and 1820, where he died in 1836 in a house built by Giuseppe Valadier at 92 via Babuino. Raffaelli produced micromosaics for the courts of Saxony, St. Petersburg, the Polish court under Stanislaw II August and for Eugène de Beauharnais. Hanisee Gabriel lists several views of Tivoli from his studio, the earliest dating from 1800.

              May. 31, 2023

Micromosaic plaque Giacomo Raffaelli, Rome, 1791

              Est: €3,000 - €4,500

Circular copper plaque with micromosaic depicting two doves sipping within small geometrical contour in white, blue and red. Signed Giacomo Raffaelli fecit and dated 1791 at verso. Diameter 2 in. Giacomo Raffaelli (Rome, 1753-1836), descendant from a lineage of kilnsmen, is considered the inventor of the classic micromosaic technique: an illusion to make classic art masterpieces, monuments and mythological and religious subjects wearable as jewels or easy to carry in pocket; his plaques became expensive souvenirs for travelers on the Grand Tour. He exhibited his micromosaics for the first time in his Piazza di Spagna atelier, on the occasion of the Holy Year 1775 and his idea was so successful that between 1824 and 1830 the area between Piazza di Spagna and Piazza del Popolo counted already 68 businesses related to micromosaic. Typical is the small contour he used to adorn  his micromosaics: a chain of white tiles with blue tiles inside, between two rows of red tiles.

              Est: €2,000 - €4,000

Mounted in golden bronze with a chiseled tense with palmettes as a lid of a golden metal box inserted in a rectangular base of onyx alabastrine for use of paperweight. Giacomo Raffaelli (Rome 1753 - Rome 1836), one of the most famous Italian mosaicists and the best known of his time, was the first to obtain the best results in small mosaics, highly sought after by the aristocracy of the Grand Tour, with the technique from He perfected around 1775, of "yarn glazes". He had two studies in Rome and was the head of a famous mosaic plant in Milan at the time of Napoleon. The mosaic composition derives from a famous ancient mosaic found in Villa Adriana during the excavations sponsored by Cardinal Furietti and transferred to the Capitoline museums at the death of the Cardinal himself

              Est: $8,000 - $12,000

glass mosaic on bronze, inscribed on the verso "Giacomo Raffaelli / Fece / Roma 1788." 5.75 in. diameter Many such roundels were crafted in Rome during the 18th century and 19th centuries as souvenirs of the "Grand Tour." Raffaelli specialized in the technique of using glass, rather than stone, as tesserae for these intricate micromosaics. Both the Victorian & Albert Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York have smaller examples of this popular subject in their collections. The image, often referred to as either The Doves of Pliny or The Capitoline Doves, comes from a Roman floor mosaic discovered in 1737 at Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli. The Roman mosaic is believed to be a copy of a lost ancient Greek mosaic at Pergamon and described by Pliny the Elder in his Natural History.
