Daud Rahim Sold at Auction Prices

Abstract artist and Fine Arts lecturer specialising in drawing and sculpting in UiTM, Mohd Daud Abdul Rahim grew up in Lenggong, Perak. He is skillful in his usage of colour and space as seen in his artworks in his exhibition, 'Ruang,' where he uses airbrush technique.

Art lovers have seen him using traditional village life as his subject while he incorporates Islamic values to most of his artworks. His works were seen in galleries such as 'Darling Muse Gallery,' where he took part in a month-long group exhibition entitled, 'The Force of Nature Ð An Artistic Impression,' where he had his own interpretation of the force of nature with his artwork, 'Makhluk Dalam Ruang Siri 18.'

    Kenangan Dan Nilai 3 presents an assemblage of images derived from a reservoir of childhood memories. Reflected in a tile like manner are the games, tastes, flavours, and art of youth, vividly ignited through an arrangement of objects in candy colours. It is particularly nostalgic as these were games that were played by every child before the invention of mobile screens, ipads, and other electronic devices. Daud Rahim was formally trained as a sculptor. He held his first solo called Ruang at Darling Muse Gallery (now Nadine Fine Art) in 2007 followed up by Jiwa Hidup, using 600 pencils in 200 colours, at the Segaris Art Centre in September 2016. He graduated with a BFA (Hons) at the Universiti ITM and studied for his MFA at the Manchester Metropolitan University (2002).

    Drawing on a variety of forms combining archaic reptile skeletons and modern transportation, Daud Rahim creates a distinct pictorial arrangement that contemplates issues concerning tradition and modernity. This work contains the Proton Saga, the first car produced in Malaysia. The word Saga is an abbreviation of 'Safety, Achievement, Greatness, and Ability'. Daud's interest in the intrinsic mechanical structures of the motorbike, automobiles and the skeletal structures of dinosaurs have been widely featured in his works. Daud Rahim was formally trained as a sculptor. He held his first solo called Ruang at Darling Muse Gallery (now Nadine Fine Art) in 2007 followed up by Jiwa Hidup, using 600 pencils in 200 colours, at the Segaris Art Center in September 2016.     The earlier works in Daud Rahim’s repertoire deal with a number of subjects. Key points would be the artist’s espousal of draughtsmanship (or drawing), repetition, time, and space. There is no immediate narration, tale, or message in these early works. Like frozen frames in an animation or a video, these visual trails aid viewers in understanding the temporal and formal facets in the artist’s practice. Daud’s choice of exposing blank or white spaces in these works only heightens this effect. the artist has used bolder colours, applied more industrial materials, and the tranquillity and grace afforded by the repetitions of fish have been replaced by charged lines and forceful mark making.

    There’s a kind of hybridized creation in Daud Rahim’s painting that’s disturbing, as if commenting on bio-engineering and cloning that has given us Dolly the Sheep, and God knows what else. There’s the image of a mouse or is it a deer, a mousedeer perhaps, and then mutations of some kind of insect and even fish. It may have been a rainy Sunday doodle when the work was created and the pastel orangey-pink backdrop sets the mood. Daud’s take on life is that things that exist around us have become a part of ourselves.Daud Rahim was formally trained as a sculptor. He held his first solo called Ruang at Darling Muse Gallery (now Nadine Fine Art) in 2007 followed up by Jiwa Hidup, using 600 pencils in 200 colours, at the Segaris Art Centre in September 2016. He graduated with a BFA (Hons) at the Universiti ITM and studied for his MFA at the Manchester Metropolitan University (2002). He is a senior lecturer at the UiTM in Perak.
