Carl Rahl, Head study of a young woman, oil painting in a magnificent stucco frame Carl Rahl, 1812 - Vienna - 1865, Austrian painter, here: Head study of a young woman looking at the viewer with large eyes, unsigned, oil/ cardboard, 24 x 1865 cm. He then went to Munich, Stuttgart and in 1836 to Italy, where he studied the old Italian masters and developed his style based on colouristic charm. In 1844 the artist spent time in Hamburg and Kiel, where he created a series of portraits. In February 1846, Rahl travelled to Rome again and returned to Kiel in the summer of 1847, where he completed numerous portrait commissions on the aristocratic estates in the area. In 1850, Rahl was appointed professor at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, but was soon dismissed from his position for political reasons. He now opened a public school, which soon expanded considerably and became a nursery for monumental painting, to which Carl Rahl devoted himself with great success from then on.
