Beech, plywood Vienna, Austria, 1952 Design: Roland Rainer (1910-2004) - Austrian architect Manufacturer: since 1957, Wilkening and Hahne, Germany Model 3/4/3 Stackable Literature: Eva B. Ottillinger, Möbeldesign der 50er Jahre, Wien im internationalen Kontext, Wien, Köln, Weimar 2005, S. 133, Abb. 53 Height: 87 cm, 44 x 57 cm Very good condition So called city-hall-chair, which is characterized by its functional and modern design Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU. Roland Rainer's so-called city hall chair was designed in 1952 and primarily manufactured by Viennese company Alfred & Emil Pollak as seating for the Vienna city hall. The armchair is made up of a beech frame and a bent plywood seat shell. This particular exemplar is the 3/4/3 model. It is a very functional chair that is suitable for public entertainment halls. It is stackable and very light. As Roland Rainer's original seats were replaced by new ones, the city hall chair has become an extremely sought after collector's item. The present chairs were manufactured by Wilkening and Hahne in Germany who produced the chair under licence since 1957. The German model differs from the original in additional bars on each side which enhance stability. They are each 87 cm tall, 44 cm wide and 57 cm deep and in very good condition with very few signs of age and wear. The seat has been revarnished. Roland Rainer (1910-2004) Architect and urban planner Roland Rainer studied at the Technical University in Vienna. After defending conformism to the views of the National Socialist regime, he still managed to teach at several universities after the war. He was the city planner for Vienna from 1958-63 and developed his own kind of teaching through numerous essays. For large public buildings, Rainer used an expressive constructive language to express democratic representation. His most significant building was the city hall of Vienna, created during 1955-58, for which he designed these extraordinary chairs. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
