JOHN GOFFE RAND, CA. 1817-28, WC, ADAM CHANDLER, BEDFORD, NH

      Est: $300 - $500

Bristol paper stamp l.r., inscribed on verso frame “Adam Chandler, Bedford, New Hamp drawn by John Rand.” Sight 8” x 4 7/8”, frame 13 1/2” x 10”. John G. Rand (1801-1873) was born in Bedford, NH where he began his artistic career upon receiving instruction from Samuel Morse, who worked in the Manchester, NH region from 1816 to 1817. This watercolor would have been executed after 1817 and before Rand traveled to Boston ca. 1828. Adam Chandler (1805-1887) was the son of a prominent NH politician, Thomas Chandler, who served as a member of the NH House of Representatives. Thomas was also a talented musician, who became a popular teacher in 1803. It is likely that he taught his son Adam the cello and commissioned his son’s portrait to reflect his musical passion.
