ARTIST: PAUL RAND (1914-1996) SIZE: 24 x 36 in./60.8 x 91.5 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: When the University of California launched its Los Angeles Extension Program, Paul Rand was asked to design the inaugural catalogue cover. Rand, then 75 years old, was one of America’s most esteemed designers, but he rarely took pro bono work, and the university had hardly any budget to pay him. It took some urging from UCLA’s creative director, Inju Sturgeon, to convince Rand to take on the project—and he succeeded wonderfully with his simple typographic design, which is seen here in lithographic form. ARTIST: PAUL RAND (1914-1996) SIZE: 24 x 36 in./61 x 91.2 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: The design legend Paul Rand created his first logo for IBM in 1956, but this poster for the tech company's 1981 international design conference remains his most iconic work—and one of the most treasured graphic designs in the corporate world. The rebus "Eye-Bee-M" was meant to support IBM's motto of "THINK”: “An Eye for perception, insight, vision; a Bee for industriousness, dedication, perseverance; an 'M' for motivation, merit, moral strength." It received such an enthusiastic reception that the company reprinted the image as an advertisement for national distribution. This, however, is the version first presented at IBM's 1981 design conference. (Contemporary; Technology; American)

Original Vintage IBM Poster 1991 Hand Signed by Paul Rand Rare

          Est: $2,500 - $3,500

Paul Rand (1914-1996) is considered one of the most influential American graphic designers. Born Peretz Rosenbaum to a devoutly Orthodox Jewish family in Brooklyn, Rand pursued art education through night classes and seeking out European art magazines where he first learned of Constructivism and Swiss Object design. He is credited with bringing the highly edited elements of these movements to the United States. Rand is behind some of the most influential corporate identities, such as IBM, ABC, Enron, and NeXT. He taught at Yale’s elite graphic design program for almost 30 years, and his students are some of the most important designers working today. Paul Rand was first employed by IBM in 1956 to redesign the company's logo. He continued consulting for the company for more than 30 years, redesigning their logo at least twice more. In 1981, to announce the in-house IBM Golden Circle award, he designed a rebus version of the logo which was initially shunned by management who "thought that it would be an invitation to in-house designers to engage in tomfoolery. They also claimed it was not IBM and failed to recognize that in one fell swoop Rand had humanized the corporation" (Rand, p. 156). It took a year for the company to actually use the design in promotion, at which point they printed it as a poster with small text at the bottom explaining the significance of each element of the rebus. It has become one of the most famous and recognizable corporate identity statements of the 20th century. (Taken from MOMA 520.1983, Modern Poster 211, Encyclopedie de l'Affiche p. 106, Modern American Poster 100). In 1991, this poster was reissued by IBM, without the explanatory text at the bottom. This is the later printing. Please note that this poster has been hand signed by Paul Rand. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster was printed on heavyweight paper and is in excellent condition.

          Est: $1,800 - $2,000

IBM rebus poster, designed by Paul Rand (American, 1914–1996) in 1981 and published in 1982, this version reissued in 1991 with artist's signature in the plate and copyright information lower left corner. Housed in a black metal frame. Sight: 35 1/8" H x 23 5/8" W. Framed: 36 1/2" H x 24 1/2" W. This rebus version of the IBM logo was first designed in 1981 and - despite initial negative feedback from some IBM managers - became one of the most recognizable and acclaimed corporate branding images of the 20th century. IBM reissued this poster ten years later (minus the original explanatory text of the 1981 version).

Rand was first employed by IBM in 1956 to redesign the company's logo. He continued consulting for the company for more than 30 years, redesigning their logo at least twice more. In 1981, he came up with the now-famous rebus, which has become one of the most famous and recognizable corporate identity statements of the 20th century. It took a year for the company to actually use the design in promotion, at which point they printed it as a poster with small text at the bottom explaining the significance of each element of the rebus; the first printing was, as a result, a very small run, and very rare. This is the second printing. Modern Poster 211, Encyclopedie de l'Affiche p. 106, Modern American 100, Resnick 72, Rand / GGG p. 23, MoMA 520.1983.

          UCLA Summer Sessions. 1993.

          Est: $1,000 - $1,200

ARTIST: PAUL RAND (1914-1996) SIZE: 24 x 36 in./61 x 91.3 cm DESCRIPTION: When the University of California launched its Los Angeles Extension Program, Paul Rand was asked to design the inaugural catalog cover. ARTIST: PAUL RAND (1914-1996) SIZE: 24 x 35 7/8 in./61 x 91.2 cm DESCRIPTION: The design legend Paul Rand created his first logo for IBM in 1956, but this poster for the tech company's 1981 international design conference remains his most iconic work—and one of the most treasured graphic designs in the corporate world.

Here, he announces the Golden Circle IBM conference at the Kauai Surf Hotel in Hawaii. The playful OPD letters stand for Office Products Division, which was the conference’s topic. The central O also represents the title of the meeting. It’s both incredibly simple and delightfully playful, which are quintessential hallmarks of Rand’s oeuvre. El Producto / For Dad. ca. 1956.

          Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: PAUL RAND (1914-1996) SIZE: 20 x 23 7/8 in./50.7 x 60.8 cm DESCRIPTION: In the mid-1950s Rand created a lighthearted series of posters for El Producto cigars. Designed primarily for use on buses and trains, they urged the public to consider cigars—ordinarily a personal purchase—as an ideal gift. The sprightly visuals often feature a cigar in the role of a debonair smoker with a wardrobe of hats; here he’s in a straw boater for summer. Bright, solid colors add to the fun, and you can’t miss the product name, which is always in stencil-type capital letters and prominently placed. There were about 20 designs in the series; this one is aimed at daughters looking for the perfect fatherly present. (Modern; American; Tobacco)
