A GERMAN PASTEL ON PAPER PORTRAIT BY FRIEDRICH RANDEL, 1839

      Est: $300 - $400

Friedrich Randel (German, 1808 - 1886), pastel on paper drawing depicting a portrait of Henriette von Mandrot, 1839. Framed. Signed and inscribed in German verso. Note: Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Christian Randel, also Randell, was a German portrait, genre and horse painter, graphic artist and draftsman. The son of a master carpenter, he was a student of Franz Kruger in Berlin around 1834. He lived in Berlin and had a studio in Magdeburg for a time. He painted in oil and pastel and also created steel engravings. From 1836 onwards he was regularly represented at the Berlin Academy exhibitions, most recently in 1870. The art historian Adolf Rosenberg found that Randel had chosen the animal motif of the Great Dane as his special animal genre.
