    René Gontran Ranson,  French 1891-1977-  Five Costume studies for Louis XIV and his courtiers;  each pencil, watercolour, and bodycolour on paper, each signed 'RANSON' (two lower left, three lower right), variously inscribed 'LOUIS XIV' (upper left), 'Page du Roi' (upper right), and 'Homme de / qualite / Com [?] de / Louis XIV' (two, upper right), one indistinctly inscribed (upper right), each 35.6 x 27.9 cm., five (5). ARR.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Ranson was a prominent costume designer who worked for the Folies Bergère from 1924 to 1932, and supplied costumes to the Max Weldy studio in Paris, alongside contemporaries such as Romain de Tirtoff (1892-1990), better known as Erté.

This drawing was used in front of the entrance to the Folies-Bergère; a smaller printed poster (see PAI-LXIII, 501A) uses the same image with Baker's name to promote the performance, “A Windy Folie.” (Art Deco; Cabaret)
