Jean Raoux, 1677 Montpellier - 1734 Paris, zug. Der Maler gehört zu den bekanntesten Künstlern aus dem Languedoc, wie auch Sébastien Bourdon, Joseph-Marie Vien oder Frédéric Bazille. Er hat wesentlich mitgewirkt bei der Erneuerung der französischen Malerei, wie neben ihm Antoine Watteau. Seine Werke zeigen häufig weibliche allegorische Darstellungen wie auch hier im vorliegenden Bild. PANDORA Öl auf Leinwand. 100 x 80 cm. Die Figur der griechischen Sage in Lebensgröße im Dreiviertel-Bildnis. Die Sagenfigur sitzt nachdenklich neben einem Sockel, von Brokattuch bedeckt und hält mit beiden Händen die Metallurne, deren Deckel sie leicht öffnet. Die Urne - gewöhnlich Büchse der Pandora genannt - zeigt im Relief eine antike Opferszene mit Feueraltar. Links oben dahinter ist ein angeschnittener Monopteros zu sehen. Die weibliche Figur anmutig wiedergegeben, Gesicht, Schultern und Arme in feinem Sfumato gemalt. Jean Raoux, 1677 - 1734 DISPUTATION IM KREIS DER ANTIKEN MUSEN Öl auf Leinwand. 63 x 83 cm. Auf dem Rahmen Künstlernamensschild mit anders lautender Zuweisung (Antoine Coypel). In einer antiken Ideallandschaft mit Blick durch eine Grottenöffnung hin auf die Meeresküste hat sich eine Vielzahl antiker Götter und Musenfiguren versammelt. Im Zentrum ein junges Mädchen in weißem Kleid mit rotem Umhang sitzend wiedergegeben, Hände und Finger im Gestus der Rede, umgeben von zumeist jugendlichen Gestalten mit Musikinstrumenten, ebenfalls antik gekleidet, die der Rede des Mädchens lauschen. Im Rücken des Mädchens erhebt sich die Gestalt eines dunkel gekleideten, bärtigen Mannes, der als Philosoph oder Dichter zu deuten ist. Links hat sich eine weibliche Göttin auf einer Wolkenbank niedergelassen, wobei es sich wohl um die Göttin Hera handeln dürfte. Weiter links die Jagdgöttin Diana mit ihren Gespielinnen in Begleitung von Jagdhunden. In der rechten Bildecke eine Gruppe weiblicher Musikantinnen mit Gambe und Harfe, die ebenfalls der Disputation lauschen. Die Ikonografie ist noch nicht eindeutig geklärt, möglicherweise handelt es sich um die Illustration eines antiken Textes, wie dies in der Zeit der Entstehung des Bildes häufig thematisiert wurde. The Vestal Virgins are depicted here tending the sacred fire in honor of the Vesta, the Roman goddess of the hearth.

Portrait of Marie-Fran‡oise Boucher, full-length, as a Vestal Virgin, holding a bunch of lilies, a landscape beyond oil on canvas, laid down on plastic board 103 x 76 1/8 in. (261.6 x 193.3 cm.) NOTES The present lot is one of three apparently autograph versions of the composition known today: the first was destroyed in a fire in the nineteenth century, but is recorded as having been signed and dated 1728; the second belongs to the museum of the Chƒteau de Versailles (though it is currently on deposit at the Mus‚e des Beaux-Arts, Dijon) and is signed and dated 1733; the present version is neither signed nor dated, but is of a quality and manner of handling fully in keeping with that of the master himself. Marie-Fran‡oise Boucher was an important lady at court, wife of the king's secretary, who died a young bride; Raoux dresses her in bridal costume and posed in Vesta's temple, and casts her in this allegorical portrait as a modern virgin. The virgin servants of Vesta, the Roman household goddess and guardian of the hearth, were a favorite subject of Raoux that he depicted on numerous occasions (in various compositions in the museums of Lille, Braunschweig, Potsdam and Montpellier, among others); they were to be understood as (admittedly flirtatious) emblems of chastity.
