Life Magazine, 3 May 1966. 9 x 13 1/4 in. silver gelatin photograph of Ray Charles seated before a wall filled with numerous awards presented to the iconic musician. Taken by Bill Ray while on assignment for Life Magazine. Various notations and ink stamps on verso, including Life photo credit to Bill Ray and 3 May 1966 date. American photojournalist Bill Ray (1936-2020) had a long career that included working for twelve years as a staff photographer for Life Magazine during the 1960s. Ray's subjects ranged broadly from celebrities to international conflicts, social movements, and trends of the decade. Some of his most popular works, which were not featured in publications but were displayed in gallery exhibitions, include Marilyn Monroe singing "Happy Birthday" to John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden in 1962 and Ray Charles at Carnegie Hall in 1966. This lot is located in Cincinnati.

This framed work has been professionally framed by Mr. Leifer's preferred framer. The frame is handsome, created in a simple, modern design much preferred by museums. The woods is a light, natural shade; the glazing is a UV plexiglass of the highest quality; the backing board is generally a sheet of foam core. Many framed items also include a white matte. Framed works will be sold as-is, in frame. It is the bidders responsibility to remove the print from the frame if they so desire. More information on the specific framing can be provided by the auction house upon request. The photographs in this auction have been examined by an expert, whose opinions pertaining to the age of the prints, the printing process, and the type of paper used, are included in the description of each photograph. Although Guernsey’s believes these descriptions to be accurate, interested buyers are urged to personally inspect the prints either at the public preview or by appointment with Guernsey’s. Image size: 24.2 x 16.7 cm Very good condition Bill Ray was a staff photographer for LIFE magazine; the present iconic picture of Marilyn Monroe already fetched over €3,600 at an international auction In 1962, Marilyn Monroe had one of her last and most remembered performances on the occasion of president JFK's 45th birthday. Her dress was made of a sheer and flesh colored marquisette fabric und served for her sultry rendition of 'Happy Birthday' that immediately captured the crowd. Bill Ray took the present picture from above the stage, after having quietly disappeared form the shielded area reserved for the press. The photograph played an important role in the legends that eventually grew around both the actress and JFK. The gelatin silver print shows the copyright stamp 'CREDIT TO READ: Bill Ray LIFE MAGAZINE © Time Inc.' on the verso. Further stamps, the label 'Photo MASI' and a number of notes such as 'Marilyn Monroe sings "Happy Birthday" to JFK [...]' are also verso presented. The print is in very good condition considering its age; there are only a few faint flaws along the upper and lower edge. The image size is 24.2 x 16.7 cm and the size of the sheet is 25.5 x 20.5 cm. Bill Ray (b. 1936) Bill Ray was born in Nebraska and started to work as a photographer in 1957, when he was active under contract with the National Geographic. In the same year, he was offered a freelance job with LIFE magazine. In 1957 he finally became their staff photographer and captured some of the most important actors, musicians or politicians of his generation, including Elvis Presley, the Beatles or Marilyn Monroe. Besides, Ray also traveled around the world, documenting the Vietnam War and numerous further historic events.
