  • Attributed to Louise Rayner - View of Edinburgh, towards the Castle
    Feb. 27, 2024

Attributed to Louise Rayner - View of Edinburgh, towards the Castle

    Est: £200 - £400

Attributed to Louise Rayner,  British 1832-1924 View of Edinburgh, towards the Castle;  pen and ink heightened with white on paper, signed 'LI RAYNER' and indistinctly dated '1848[?]' (lower right), 22 x 39.8 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present view of Edinburgh depicts many of the city's most recognisable sights, including the Neoclassical building of the National Gallery of Scotland, the striking Scott Monument, and the Edinburgh Castle complex, visible on the hill which stretches into the distance to the left of the scene.  Rayner was taught by her father, the artist Samuel Rayner (1806-1879), before studying under a range of family friends who included George Cattermole (1800-1868), David Roberts (1796-1864), Edmund Niemann (1813-1876), and Frank Stone (1800-1859). The present cityscape is absolutely typical of Rayner's output, which consists almost entirely of bustling street scenes of historic British towns, including Salisbury, Cambridge, and Chester, as well as Edinburgh.

Louise Rayner, British 1832-1924 Barron's Woollen and Rag Store, The West Bow, Edinburgh; watercolour and bodycolour heightened with gum arabic and white on paper laid down on board, signed 'Louise Rayner.' (lower left), 40.8 x 30.6 cm. Provenance: with M. Newman, St James's, London.; Private Collection, UK, since 1962.; By descent. Note: This attractive four-storeyed house with its overhanging eaves was used by a number of 19th-century artists and photographers as the centrepiece of their depictions of the West Bow. The West Bow, a winding street leading uphill from the Grassmarket to the junction of Castle Hill and the Lawnmarket, was the only route of access to Edinburgh Castle from the south, until the building of the George IV Bridge in the early 19th century. Louise Rayner travelled around Britain during most summers in the 1870s and 1880s, using her journeys as inspiration. She was celebrated for her detailed watercolours of street scenes, such as the present work, in which the quaintly old-fashioned architecture is enlivened by the presence of foreground figures going about their everyday tasks. A watercolour of the same view sold recently at Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, 10 June 2021, lot 13 ( £11,250).
