        Sep. 21, 2024

DOEL REED (1895-1985) SCARCE OIL ON CANVAS

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Chester Doel Reed (1895-1985) Second quarter of the 20th Century. The large oil on canvas in an interesting and varied palette is signed in red pigment lower left and displayed in a very fine custom frame. Oil paintings by Doel Reed, especially works this large, are rarely offered at auction. Those that have appeared are typically views of the American Southwest from Reed's later Modernist period. This slightly more impressionist work displays a style and topography suggestive of the artist's career prior to his taking a position as instructor of art at Oklahoma State University. After studying and working in architecture, and prior to serving in World War One, Dole Reed studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He returned there to study and teach after the war. It's worth noting the similarities between the painting being offered here and a landscape by Lewis Henry Meakin (1850-1917) his instructor at the Academy. While Meakin is primarily credited with introducing Reed to printmaking, the landscape up for bid here bears a striking resemblance to the composition of Meakin's 1915 canvas titled Evening Rain. After his time in Ohio, Dole Reed took a position as head of the Oklahoma State University art department in 1924. A position he would hold until his retirement in 1959. Following retirement he moved to Taos, New Mexico where he lived until his death in 1985. Over the course of his career, Reed participated in more than 300 juried art exhibitions and was elected to the National Academy of Design for his achievements as a printmaker, specifically the medium of aquatint etching, for which he is considered a master. To this day, OSU's Dole Reed Center in Taos honors his legacy with cultural and educational programs, workshops and residencies that serve the arts community both locally and nationally. Canvas measures 20.25 x 30.25 with a framed size of 29 x 39 inches. Without proof of exemption, be aware that internet sales tax applies to all Internet transactions and local sales tax may apply to local pick-up transactions. Doel Reed (1884-1985) Spring 1941 The aquatint etching printed on Umbria Italia watermarked paper in an edition of 200 is signed by the artist in pencil lower right and accompanied by the original folio. This image served as the eleventh Prairie Print Makers Presentation Print for distribution to associate members and sale to the organization's membership. Image measures 10 x 14, sheet is 13 x 17.5, and frame is 20.5 x 24 inches. AN ABSENTEE BID PLACED IN ADVANCE COULD LOSE TO A LIVE BID OF EQUAL AMOUNT PLACED LATER. First bid precedence is not possible in auctions that incorporate live bidding via multiple online platforms, live bidders participating in the sale room and live telephone bidders. The only ways to avoid the possibility of losing the bid in this manner is to attend the live auction or bid absentee with plus-one option. Without proof of exemption, be aware that internet sales tax applies to all Internet transactions and local sales tax may apply to local pick-up transactions. We happily provide seamless in-house packing and shipping services on nearly everything we sell. Until further notice, we cannot offer international shipping in-house.

        Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Doel Reed Oklahoma, New Mexico, Indiana, (1895-1985) New Mexico landscape, 1952 aquatint Numbered (17/25) lower left, signed and dated in the plate, signed in pencil lower right. Condition: There is no evidence of any foxing, toning, or otherwise surface impediments on this print. It is framed under glass with archival materials as no staining is evident and has not been examined out of the frame. Biography from the Archives of askART: Remembered as an important member of the Taos art community after 1960, Doel Reed achieved an international reputation as a landscape artist and printmaker, and as a master of aquatint. His paintings and aquatints were earth-toned and geometric in style and featured architectural forms of the New Mexico landscape. He was born in Logansport, Indiana, and from 1924 until 1959, chaired the art department at Oklahoma State University. Then he moved to Talpa, near Taos, New Mexico where he and his family had been spending many summers and he had done and he did much sketching in Arizona and New Mexico, especially the countryside and pueblos near Talpa. His method of working was to sketch in the field and then complete the paintings in his studio. He first pursued architecture but enjoying drawing, enrolled at the Art Academy of Cincinnati from 1916 to 1917 and 1919 to 1920. He served in World War I and was gassed and temporarily blinded. After months in base hospitals in France, he returned to the Art Academy and became interested in graphics. However, in those days, there were few schools specializing in that subject, so he was largely self taught. In 1952, he was elected to the National Academy of Design. He wrote a book, Doel Reed Makes an Aquatint, published 1965, and known for oils and caseins, he earned much fame from his aquatints. An article titled 'Doel Reed Haunted by Nature's Moods', by M.J.
