      Dixon Reeder (1912-1970), "Portrait of Zane" oil on canvas. Canvas: 24"H x 19.75"W. Unsigned. Unframed. Provenance: Purchased from Flora Blanc Reeder, the artist's wife. Collection of Dr. Edmund Pillsbury. Dixon Reeder studied under Sallie Blythe Mummert in Fort Worth and later attended the Arts Students League of New York. He traveled and painted across Europe and later returned to Fort Worth where he painted and taught at Texas Wesleyan. Reeder, known for his portraiture, was widely exhibited and his work is in many collections including Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Art Institute of Chicago and Brooklyn (New York) Museum.

He was also a leading modernist in the city. This painting combines both roles. There are three portraits layered on top of each other, the other two being upside down.
