      John Bromfield Gay Rees,  British 1912-1965 -  Tobias, 1940;  watercolour and pencil on paper, signed and dated indistinctly lower left 'Bromfield Rees 26.VIII.40', 67 x 51 cm (ARR)  Provenance:  the Descendants of Sidney and Stella Churchill (1862-1921 and 1883-1954) and Ruth Plant (1912-1988)  Note:  born in Wales, the artist was a friend of William Scott, and his work was admired by Sir William Rothenstein. Works by the artist are in public collections including the Glynn Vivien Gallery and Camarthen County Hall. The present work is similar in style and subject matter to David Jones; the pair may have also shared a personal bond through Jones's deep interest in the history and mythology of Wales.
