Richard Stone Reeves - Safely Kept

Richard Stone Reeves Safely Kept Oil on canvas 20 x 24 in Signed, inscribed, dated ‘90. Safely Kept was a Maryland-bred bay filly sired by Horatius. She was bred by David and JoAnn Hayden and began her career in 1988 racing in their colors. Her sensational 2-year- old season caught the attention of Jayeff B Stable’s Rich Santulli and Barry Weisbord, who purchased her privately and turned her over to trainer Alan Goldberg. Safely Kept won 24 of her 31 starts. Most of her runs were against colts and geldings because there were few sprint races for females at the time. She finished “in the money” in 30 of 31 starts. As a 2-year-old, she won four of five races, including two stakes races in the Playpen Stakes and the Smart Angle Stakes. At age 3, she separated herself from every other sprinter in North America by recording eight wins in nine races. Among her eight stakes wins in 1989 were the Test Stakes (G1) at Saratoga and the Genuine Risk Handicap (G2) and Prioress Stakes (G2). Those performances, as well as her 9-8-1-0 record that year, earned her the Eclipse Award for champion sprinter. At age 4, Safely Kept went seven for seven, all stakes races. The final race of her 4-year-old season was a victory over a star-studded international field of 14 sprinters in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1). At age 5, Safely Kept won five of seven races and finished third in the other two. She three- peated in the Genuine Risk Handicap (G2), three-peated in the Maryland Million Distaff Handicap, three-peated in the Garden Stakes Handicap (G3), repeated in the Meadowlands Handicap (G3), and won the Chicago Handicap at Arlington Park. Safely Kept’s career earnings of $2,194,206 rank her as the greatest earner among any filly or mare bred in the state of Maryland. In 2011 Safely Kept was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame.

When they led Fly So Free out of the barn, I thought, ‘What an eyeful!’ A tall, strapping, liver chestnut with good bone and nearly perfect conformation, he stood like a peacock. The Valandos loved that horse so much that he gave both Tommy Valando and his lovely wife, Elizabeth, more pleasure than anything they had known for many years. After the unfortunate death of Tommy, Elizabeth decided to keep her stable and Fly So Free was sent to Three Chimneys Farm, where this painting was done. Elizabeth still loved the horse so much that she wanted a second painting showing Fly So Free as a mature stallion. Richard Stone Reeves Minnetonka and Colt by Dr. Fager Oil on canvas 32 x 38 in Signed, Inscribed, Dated 1977. Provenance: Mr. and Mrs. Gary Wolfson, Happy Valley Farm, Ocala, Florida Several letters and telegrams between Reeves and the Wolfsons will accompany the lot. Possibly exhibited at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, c. 1978, per a letter from Reeves. Minnetonka was a beloved mare owned by the Wolfsons, depicted here with her foal Domain by, Dr. Fager. Bred and owned by Cristopher Chenery, Hill Prince was sired by Princequillo, a great racehorse in his own right, and out of the Blue Hen mare Hildene. Hill Prince won the Babylon Handicap, the Cowdin Stakes, and the World's Playground Stakes as a 2-year-old. In his 3-year-old campaign he was victorious in the Preakness Stakes, American Derby, Jerome Handicap, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Wood Memorial, Withers Stakes, and Sunset Handicap, as well as running second in the Kentucky Derby. At 4 and 5 years old, Hill Prince won the New York and San Marco handicaps. Hill Prince was named champion 2- and 3-year-old male, Horse of the Year in 1950, and Champion handicap horse in 1951. Hill Prince stood at Claiborne Farm, where he sired 23 stakes winners, including the 1957 American champion 3-year-old Filly Bayou, as well as Coaching Club American Oaks winner Levee and Gardenia Stakes winner Pepperwood. He was more important as a broodmare sire and was the damsire of Hall of Fame horses Shuvee and Dark Mirage. Richard Stone Reeves - RIVA RIDGE

Oil on canvas Signed, inscribed, dated 1972. Provenance: The Chenery/Tweedy family. While often overshadowed by his more famous younger stablemate Secretariat, Riva Ridge was a champion in his own right. Penny Chenery considered Riva Ridge the horse that "saved the farm." As a juvenile, the speedy front-running colt swept nearly all of the major East Coast stakes, winning seven of nine starts and a 2-year-old championship. His success continued at 3, garnering the prestigious 1972 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes among other victories. In his final season as a 4-year-old, Riva Ridge earned yet another championship while establishing two track records and one world record in the process, retiring with career earnings totaling $1,111,347. Depicting the horse in Saratoga with groom Eddie Sweat and trainer Lucien Lauren, this particular painting adorned the cover of the July 14, 1973, issue of the Thoroughbred Record following Riva Ridge's world record-breaking performance in the Brooklyn Handicap to become racing's 12th million-dollar earner. It is the oldest course still in operation in North America. The ancient but stately grandstand has been extended over the years but still retains its magical charm. To me, the steeplechasing events, now abandoned at all other major American tracks, are amongst Saratoga's treasured traditions. Richard Stone Reeves Man o' War $20,000 - $25,000 When Man o' War sold at the Saratoga sales for $5,000, the man bidding that day on behalf of Samuel D. Riddle was Ed Buhler, the uncle of Richard Stone Reeves. Reeves said that this bit of knowledge when he was young "My uncle bought Man o' War" ? led directly to his association with Thoroughbreds. \n \n"It was," Reeves says, "a very special thrill when the publishers commissioned me to paint Man o' War for Classic Lines. I had gathered reference material since I was a boy. It was almost as if I had been practicing all my life for that one painting.? - Richard Stone Reeves, Classic Lines, page 95. \n \nMan O' War was bred by August Belmont, Jr at his Nursery Stud in Kentucky. Shortly after Man O' War was foaled, Belmont, Jr. enlisted in the United States Army to serve in France during World War I and while overseas, his wife named the foal Man O' War in honor of her husband. The Belmonts intended to race Man O' War themselves, but Belmont, Jr. was so absorbed with his wartime tasks?given the responsibility of supplying horses to the troops in Europe?he decided to sell their 21 yearlings at auction in Saratoga Springs, New York. Samuel D. Riddle purchased Man O' War for the sum of $5,000. Nicknamed ?Big Red,? the high-headed chestnut son of Fair Play went on to win 20 of 21 starts and was considered a champion at 2 and 3 as well as Horse of the Year in 1920. Man o? War was a leading sire, and his influence on American breeding was immense. Man O' War is widely considered one of the greatest racing horses of all time and in 1920 was The New York Times outstanding athlete of the year alongside Babe Ruth. Man o' War was retired by his owner Sam Riddle after his perfect Horse of the Year three-year-old campaign. In 1921 Man o' War started his stud duties at Hinata Farm outside of Lexington, which was managed by Elizabeth Daingerfield. The next year he was moved to Riddle's new farm, Faraway Farm. Here Man o' War became a Kentucky tourist attraction.

Richard Stone Reeves Swaps $12,000 - $15,000 Rex Ellsworth bred and owned Swaps and he was trained throughout his career by Mesh Tenney. Swaps was the son of Khaled, a stallion imported by the Aga Khan's and his dam, Iron Reward, was a half-sister to the Kentucky Derby winner Iron Liege. In the 1955 Kentucky Derby Swaps and jockey Willie Shoemaker defeated the odds-on favorite, Nashua with Eddie Arcaro in the saddle. Arcaro was quoted before the race as saying that a horse named Summer Tan was the primary threat in the Derby which led to a little bit of back and forth between the two camps which ultimately ended in the challenge of a match race. Nashua followed up the Derby loss with wins in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Swaps, nursing a split hoof wall, returned to the West Coast to rest, but ended up running in several races?breaking or equaling six track records at various distances, on turf and on dirt. \n \nThe match race between Nashua and Swaps was set to take place on August 31, 1955. Swaps tuned up early for a prep and on August 20th ran in and won the prestigious American Derby, setting a course record of 1-3/16 miles on the turf in 1:54-3?5 (a record that stood for over 50 years and maybe still stands). However, Swaps re-injured his foot was not able to run to his full potential in the match race and Nashua won easily and went on to become the Horse of the Year in 1955. The following year, at the age of four, Swaps was named Horse of the Year, beating Nashua by 78 votes to 45. William H.P. Robertson wrote in his "History of Thoroughbred Racing in America" that Swaps "entered stud with the largest collection of recognized world records (five) in history, and a lifetime performance summary, as follows: 25 starts, 19 wins, two seconds, two thirds, earnings of $848,900." \n \nSwaps stood at John Galbreath's Darby Dan Farm in Lexington, Kentucky and spent his last five seasons at Spendthrift Farm. Swaps sired 35 stakes winners, among his most successful offspring were Chateaugay, winner of the 1963 Kentucky Derby and the 1963 Belmont Stakes, and the U.S. Hall of Fame filly, Affectionately. \n \n25 career starts 14 starts at Hollywood Park 14-10-1-2, at Hollywood park he went 10-1-2 \n \nSwaps won the following stakes races at Hollywood Park \n \nWill Rogers Stakes by 12 lengths; first stakes race in which Swaps was the betting favorite; favored in all subsequent races. \n \nCalifornian Stakes set a new world record for 8-1?2 furlongs with time of 1:40-2?5, "almost casually" \n \nWesterner Stakes- front-running effort, "drew out at will" in the stretch to open a 10-length lead, won by 6 lengths after being eased at odds of 1-20; win betting only for a five-horse field

Richard Stone Reeves Eddie Arcaro $9,000 - $12,000 Eddie Arcaro is a Hall of Fame jockey who won more American classic races than any other jockey in history and is the only rider to have won the U.S. Triple Crown twice. He is widely regarded as one of the, if not the, greatest jockeys in the history of American Thoroughbred horse racing. Arcaro won his first race in 1932 at the Agua Caliente racetrack in Tijuana, Mexico; he was 16 years old. In 1934, he began to ride at the newly opened Narragansett Park but was relatively unknown, but in 1935 he would get his first mount for a Kentucky Derby contender named Nellie Flag who was owned by Calumet. While Arcaro did not win either race with Nellie Flag the association he made with Calumet would last for many years and produce some of the greatest winners in the history of the American turf. Richard Stone Reeves chose to paint Eddie Arcaro in the Calumet silks because of the immense success that Arcaro had when riding their horses. Arcaro won his first Kentucky Derby in 1938 aboard the Calumet owned Lawrin. He is tied with Bill Hartack for most Derby wins with five, and has the most wins in the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes with six. He won the U.S. Triple Crown in 1941 on Whirlaway and again in 1948 on Citation, both horses were owned by Calumet. His other Kentucky Derby wins came on Calumet?s Hill Gail and Fred Hooper?s Hoop Jr. In addition to the American Classic wins Arcaro also won the Jockey Club Gold Cup 10 times, the Juvenile Stakes 7 times, the National Stallion Stakes 7 times, the Wood Memorial Stakes 9 times, the Suburban Handicap 8 times, the Withers Stakes 6 times, and the Kentucky Oaks 4 times. Arcaro rode some of the greatest horses of the 20th century including: Whirlaway, Citation, Ponder, Hoop Jr., Challedon, Kelso, Nashua, Mark-Ye-Well, Hill Prince, Bold Ruler, Sword Dancer, and Real Delight.

Richard Stone Reeves Kashmir II $2,000 - $3,000 Kashmir II was bred in Ireland by Jane Levins Moore and sold as a yearling at the Newmarket sales for ?8,600. He was purchased by Peter Butler and sent to France to train under Mick Bartholomew and begin his racing career. In 1965, as a two-year-old, Kashmir won Prix du D?but at Saint-Cloud and the Prix de Martinvast at Longchamp before stepping up in class in the Prix Robert Papin. Kashmir handled the step up in class beautifully and secured the win, ridden to victory by the famous English jockey Lester Piggott. Kashmir won his three-year-old debut in the Prix Djebel before shipping to England?where he was called Kashmir II. Lester Piggott declined to ride Kashmir II in the 2000 Guineas and the mount was given to Jimmy Lindley. Lindley made the most of the occasion and sent Kashmir II out to an early three length lead early on the massive field of twenty-four. Lindley, fearing that they might be caught, furiously rode the colt down the Rowley Mile, getting every ounce of effort that he could out of Kashmir. In the end, it was enough, just. The pair held 0n to win by a head, capturing one of the jewels of British racing, the 2000 Guineas, in quite an unconventional manner. After the Guineas Kashmir II returned to France where he was retired to stud and became a successful breeding stallion. Among his best winners were Moulines, Dumka, Blue Cashmere, Kamicia, and Lightning.
