        Est: $10,000 - $15,000

VITTORIO REGGIANINI (italian 1858-1938) PARLOUR SCENE WITH TWO LADIES Signed 'Reggianini' bottom right, oil on canvas 19 3/4 x 15 3/4 in. (50.2 x 40cm) provenance: Private Collection, Pennsylvania. NOTE: Vittorio Reggianini's best known and most sought after works include scenes of bourgeois figures dressed in very elegant clothing, and often in highly ornate and luxurious interiors. Through his depictions of men and women in opulent fashions and environments, he looked to revive a sophisticated past by romanticizing his own present day environs. In the present lot, one is immediately drawn to the artist's deft rendering of fabrics, as seen in the shiny silk and delicate beading on the dresses of the two women in the center of the composition. The reflection of light on the silk dresses, as well as the gilded objects, including the mirror, urn, and furniture, lend a lavish and sumptuous effect to the overall vignette. The beautiful, colorful rug and marble wall leading up to the gold wallpaper only heighten this impression. The expressions of the characters are playful and joyous, although the look on the woman in the green dress creates a sense of intrigue and mystery. The viewer is left wondering what kind of exchanges the three were sharing, and is therefore further lured into the painting.

Vittorio Reggianini (Italian, 1858-1939), "The Secret", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 39 1/2 in. x 26 3/4 in., period frame. Provenance: Collection of Colonel Bluford H.J. Balter (1884-1971) and Alva S. Oteri Balter (1884-1973), New Orleans; Vincent Mann Gallery, New Orleans, 1977; Collection of Mrs. Dudley J. Hughes, Jackson, MS. Note: Born in Modena in 1858, Vittorio Reggianini trained in the local academy, the Accademia di Belle Arti, alongside Gaetano Bellei and Eugenio Zamphighi. In 1885, he moved to Florence and it was during this period that the artist established a reputation for himself on the international art market. At this time, the artist's choice of subject matter and style dramatically shifted from the local historical realism that dominated his earliest work to the new Continental taste for more fanciful paintings that recreated the luxuriant lifestyles and opulent decor of the late 18th and early 19th century. The artist’s masterworks were genre subjects, which depicted the life of elegant ladies and gentlemen of the late 18th century. He was a superb draughtsman and had a particular talent for painting the sumptuous fabrics and furniture of that period. Reggianini’s subject matter always suggests a story, usually of a romantic nature. In this particularly beautiful example of the artist’s work, a lady receives a love letter which she reads in secret with her sisters. He paints their hands and faces with delicate precision, and their satin gowns are exquisitely executed. The empire waist and décolletage of the women’s dresses and the curled hair, styled to resemble Grecian fashion, perfectly personify the styles worn during Napoleon’s Empire period from 1804-1815.

He moved to Florence in 1885, where he established a reputation as an artist on the international market. This move saw a dramatic shift away from his earlier works of historical realism to a new taste that believed in the supremacy of paintings that reflected the opulent and ostentatious decor of the eighteenth century. Reggianini is heralded as one of the best at recording the texture of luxurious fabrics; he, along with Arturo Ricci and Frédéric Soulacroix, specialized in the Silk and Satins school. In this work, a woman is sumptuously dressed in pink satin. Her hair is arranged in an up-do that accentuates a coy smile. Her suitor is likewise attired in the height of fashion. This painting epitomizes the opulence and leisure that the 18th Century Costume artists so much attempted to convey.

Dudley J Hughes, Jackson, MS.

        Reggianini "The Lock"

        Est: $4,000 - $6,500

This painting is a remarkable example of Vittorio Reggianini’s early work. The study of Fragonard’s The Lock is both a late 19th century homage to the great French painter as well as an example of Reggianini’s diversity of style. This passionate scene of two lovers locking themselves in a bedroom is depicted in a delicate and sensitive manner. Signed lower left. Born in 1858, Reggianini studied at the academy in Modena with peers such as Gaetano Bellei and Eugenio Zamphighi. After his move to Florence, he established a reputation for himself in the art market and shifted his style from historical realism to the opulence of the 18th century. He is known for his graceful rendering of interior scenes, especially highlighted in the attention he gave to clothing and upholstery.
