      Don Reich (20th Century) California, Watercolor. Titled: The Way She Talked About the Grand Canyon, 1968. Signed. Information verso. Reich was born in Martinez, California in 1931 and grew up there and in Placer County. A prolific painter, he was largely self-taught as an artist although he studied briefly at Sacramento City College under Wayne Thiebaud, Amalia Fischbacher, and others. He had his first one artist shows in the 1950s at The California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco and the Dallas Museum of Fine Art. By the 1960s, Reich joined the stable of painters and ceramists at Adeliza McHugh’s Candy Store Gallery in Folsom, which included Robert Arneson, Roy DeForest, Maija Peeples-Bright, Jim Nutt, Gladys Nilsson and David Gilhooly among others. He gained recognition with collages and drawings in a spare expressionist style. His work encompassed figures, surrealist fantasies, and non-objective images and his later years saw him venture into color abstraction. In 2005, Don Reich’s work was featured in the one-person exhibition titled: Fooling the Eye, Fooling the Mind: Burnished Drawings by Don Reich at the Crocker Art Museum.
