He was particularly known for his portraits and figure studies, which often featured a limited palette and bold, gestural brushstrokes. In addition to his painting, Reid was a respected teacher and author, with several instructional books on watercolor technique to his name. He taught workshops and classes throughout the United States and Europe, and was a frequent instructor at the Scottsdale Artists' School in Arizona. Reid's artwork was exhibited widely during his lifetime, and he was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the American Watercolor Society Gold Medal and the National Watercolor Society Lifetime Achievement Award.
