Reid Pansies Toronto.1900', 23 x 25.5 cm  Provenance:  Roger Hurlin;  The Collection of Mary and Alan Hobart, Founders of Pyms Gallery, purchased from the above on the 4th September 1982  Note:  Reid is best known for her flower paintings and was thought of as the most important painter of the subject in Canada in the late 19th century. She was the first woman to serve on the executive committee for the Ontario Society of Artists and was one of the first women to be elected an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) in 1893. Her work once again came to public attention following the 2020 exhibition 'Quiet Harmony: The Art of Mary Hiester Reid' at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Painting what most appealed to her in her everyday life, Reid's canvases depict the domestic from a perspective of refinement, charm and grace. Mary Hiester Reid settled in the City of Toronto in 1885 with her future husband, fellow artist George Agnew Reid. They quickly became central figures within the arts community - Mary being one of the first women accepted into the Ontario Society of Artists and into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In this still-life, four dulcet roses bow with the weight of their blossoms from the mouth of a vase. The background is a tracery of red petals and foliage - the remainder of the bouquet, setting the stage for the bright yellow flowers in the foreground. Estimate: $2,000-3,000
