STEPHEN REID (BRITISH, 1873-1948) WASHINGTON MANOR HOUSE PAINTING PRESENTED TO JOHN W. DAVIS (WEST VIRGINIA, 1873-1955), oil on canvas, depicting a bucolic stone English country house with old growth trees and sheep grazing in a meadow beneath a blooming fruit tree. Signed lower right "STEPHEN REID 1920." Housed in the original gilt gesso frame with its original surface and a plaque reading "THE WASHINGTON MANOR HOUSE SULGRAVE, ENGLAND / PRESENTED TO THE HON. JOHN W. DAVIS, AMERICAN EMBASSADOR TO LONDON / BY THE SULGRAVE INSTITUTION, BRITISH BRANCH, 1921." Dated 1920. 24 1/2" x 29 3/4" sight, 34 1/2" x 39 1/2" OA. Catalogue Note: John William Davis was an American politician, diplomat, and lawyer. He served under President Woodrow Wilson as the Solicitor General of the United States and the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom. He was the Democratic nominee for president in 1924, losing to Republican incumbent Calvin Coolidge.

Stephen Reid, Scottish 1873-1948- A lady hanging up laundry in a garden; oil on canvas, signed and indistinctly dated 'STEPHEN REID / 26[?]' (lower right), 43.5 x 53.3 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Reid was an artist and illustrator who was influenced by the work of Edwin Austin Abbey (1852-1911). Reid was evidently particularly interested in the depiction of historical scenes, featuring figures in elegant 18th-century costumes in, for example, the dappled sunlight of a country garden, as in his 'Waiting in the Garden' which sold at Bonhams, New York, on 27th January 2007 (lot 120) for $9,000.

This lot features an original oil on canvas painting by Stephen Reid (Scottish 18731948) depicting the procession of the Arc of the Covenant. Stephen Reid was an illustrator and painter who specialized in Georgian settings and costume pieces. Born in Aberdeen, he was educated Gray's School of Art and the Royal Scottish Academy. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists at the age of 33. His early work was influenced by Edwin Austin Abbey. Books he illustrated include Alfred Noyes' The Magic Casement (1908); Eric Wood's Famous Voyages of the Great Discoverers (1910) and Eleanor Hull's The Boys' Cuchulain (1910). He also contributed to magazines, including The Strand Magazine and The Connoisseur. Painting is signed "Stephen Reid" lower left register. Very good condition, one tear in the upper right register.
