He was equally well-known as a bon viveur and collector, commissioning a number of paintings from the most well regarded sporting artists of the day, including Philip Reinagle, Sawrey Gilpin and Henry Bernard Chalon. He wrote ' A sporting tour through the northern parts of England', 1804; and 'A sporting tour through various parts of France in the year 1802', published in1806.Thornton was a Lieutenant Colonel in his father's old regiment, the 2nd West York Militia, but resigned in 1795

He trained at the Royal Academy, and was initially a portrait painter, through the influence of his tutor, Allan Ramsay (1713 - 1784). He later gave up this genre to become a naturalist painter, and became widely renowned. In 1812 he became an academic at the Royal Academy.
