He was equally well-known as a bon viveur and collector, commissioning a number of paintings from the most well regarded sporting artists of the day, including Philip Reinagle, Sawrey Gilpin and Henry Bernard Chalon. He wrote ' A sporting tour through the northern parts of England', 1804; and 'A sporting tour through various parts of France in the year 1802', published in1806.Thornton was a Lieutenant Colonel in his father's old regiment, the 2nd West York Militia, but resigned in 1795

Magnificent painter, who specialised in animal themes. He trained at the Royal Academy, and was initially a portrait painter, through the influence of his tutor, Allan Ramsay (1713 - 1784).
