Ramsay Richard Reinagle RA (British, 1775 - 1862) Spaniel and Pointers, Circa 1790 A pair Oil on Panel Provenance: Captain Gilbey, and thence by decent Son of the painter Philipp Reinagle (1749 – 1833), Ramsay Richard was so accomplished by the age of 13 he had begun exhibiting at the Royal Academy. The sure handling of composition and chiaroscuro belies the artist’s youth. Taught by his father, Ramsay Richard was strongly influenced by 17th century Dutch painters of nature such as Ruisdael, Potter and Wouwerman, and he occasionally reproduced their works. Reinagle was an adept painter of animals, hunting scenes and landscapes, and the influence of these earlier artists is often detectable in his paintings during a period when earlier Dutch art was highly collectable in Britain. Adapting these modes to appeal to a contemporary audience, Reinagle made sure to depict subjects and themes which could appeal to the English country gentleman and often portrayed hunting scenes prominently featuring English breeds of dog. Dimensions: (Panel) 19.75 in. (H) x 23.25 in. (W)

Reinagle 1793 AE: sui 18' (centre left) 150 x 120cm (59 x 47 in.)Provenance: Sale, Christie's, London, 19 November 1982, lot 8Sale, James Adam & Sons, Townley Hall, 10 October 2017, lot 422.Private collection, UK, acquired at the above saleExhibited:(Probably) London, Royal Academy, 1793, n. 282, as 'Portrait of a favourite dog'Son of the painter Philipp Reinagle (1749 - 1833), Ramsay Richard executed this picture at the precocious age of 18 and had begun exhibiting at the Royal Academy five years earlier. The sure handling of composition and chiaroscuro belies the artist's youth. In this composition a water spaniel has cornered a wild cat up an oak tree and a standoff has ensued. The scene has been caught with a theatrical spotlight effect using the backdrop of a large sandstone boulder. The spaniel has chased the cat away from its prize of a dead bird which now lies before the spaniel's front paws, its feathers littering the ground. The spaniel, however, appears to be less interested in stealing the cat's kill than in enjoying having cornered the furious feline, which scrabbles and hisses angrily on a tree branch. Beneath them both the broken body of the bird lies suspended by foliage over a pool of water which separates the viewer from the battle. One might read this scene as a metaphor for the struggle between civilisation and wilderness: the well-groomed, domesticated spaniel tackling a savage, leering cat. A feather of the innocent bird dangles from the cat's claws, evidence of its crime.

Ramsay Richard Reinagle RA (1775-1862) Portrait of John Turlough Dering of Crow Hall, Denver, Norfolk, standing full length, and his daughter Mary Anne Lee-Warner (née Dering), seated full length, with a dog, in a wooded landscape signed and dated 1828 lower right oil on canvas 150 x 124cm Provenance: Thomas Agnew & Sons Ltd, London; Major B M Ward, M.V.O., His Sale, Christie's, London, 11 November 1983, lot 176, When acquired by a descendant of the sitters, Heydon Grange, Norfolk The seated lady in the present portrait, Mary Anne, only daughter of John Turlough Dering, a horticulturist of Crow Hall, Denver, Norfolk, married in 1819 William Wilson Lee-Warner (formerly Bagge, 1785-1852) of Quebec House, East Dereham. Their only daughter Marian Derian Lee-Warner (1829-1906) married in 1855 Colonel William Earle Gascoyne Lytton Bulwer, eldest son of William Earle Lytton Bulwer (c.1799-1877) of Heydon. The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which appears to be unlined. The canvas tension is good overall. A small damage has been repaired from the reverse with a canvas patch. There are minor undulations in the corners of the pictures and stretcher bar marks are starting to form following the outlines of the wooden framed behind. There are deformations along the lower edge caused by debris trapped between the canvas and lower stretcher bar. The paint layers are in a good, stable condition overall. Areas of overpaint are mainly located in the red dress and lower left corner. In the dress the overpaint covers drying cracks. In overpaint has darkened in some areas but overall is well matched to the original. The varnish is very matte and in some areas has a slightly hazy, uneven appearance. Framed 164 x 137cm

Oil on Board English Luminescent Landscape by Ramsay Richard Reinagle (1775-1862) English portrait, landscape, and animal painter, and son of Philip Reinagle. In Ornate carved antique English frame. In frame measures 37"x31"x2 1/2". Weight 20 pds Ramsay Richard Reinagle was a pupil of his father Philip Reinagle, whose style he followed, and he exhibited at the Royal Academy as early as 1788. He afterwards went to Italy, and was studying in Rome in 1796. Subsequently, he visited Holland in order to study from the Dutch masters. After his return home he painted for a time at Robert Barker's panorama in Leicester Square, and then entered into partnership with Thomas Edward Barker, Roberts eldest son, who was not himself an artist, in order to erect a rival building in the Strand. They produced panoramas of Rome, the Bay of Naples, Florence, Gibraltar, Bay of Gibraltar, and Paris, but in 1816 disposed of their exhibition to Henry Aston Barker and John Burford. In 1805 Reinagle was elected an associate of the Society of Painters in Watercolours, and in 1806 a member. He became its treasurer in 1807, and was president from 1808 to 1812 Between 1806 and 1812 he sent to its exhibitions sixty-seven drawings, mostly Italian landscapes and scenery of the English lakes. During the same period he exhibited portraits and landscapes in oil at the Royal Academy, of which he became an associate in 1814, and an academician in 1823. He was a clever copyist of the old masters, and is said to have been much employed by an art dealer in restoring and "improving" their works.PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Collection.. (English, 1775-1862) "Portrait of Caroline, Henry Frederick and Emily, the Children of Henry Walker, Esq. of Blyth Hall, Nottingham, and of Clifton Park and Eastwood House, York (1775-1860), and his wife Elizabeth Abney Walker (1786-1850)", ca. 1820-1824 oil on canvas unsigned, the canvas stretcher with antique handwritten label identifying Caroline Walker (Ashton Case) as the grandmother of "Daisy Radcliffe" - Marguerite M. Daisy (nee Ashton Case-Walker) and with a "Christie's" stamp and black inventory number "AE1994". Presented in a period giltwood frame. 94" x 59", framed 109-3/4" x 74-3/4" Provenance: Caroline E. Walker Case (1808-1883), thence by descent to her son Henry Ashton Case, Esq. (1851-1935); his daughter Marguerite Magdalen Daisy Ashton Case Radcliffe (1883-1943); probably the Christie's Estate sale of her husband Everard Joseph R. H. Radcliffe, 5th Baronet (1884-1969), Rudding Park, Yorkshire, October 16-17, 1972. Exhibited: A matching pair of portraits attributed to Reinagle of the childrens' parents, Henry and Elizabeth Walker, are on permanent display in Clifton Park Museum, Rotherham. The portraits were donated in 1944 by Winifred Causton, the sister of Daisy Radcliffe through whom this portrait descended. Reinagle also exhibited a portrait he painted of Henry Walker's younger brother Joshua, Esq., M.P. (1776-1862) with his "favourite horse" at the Royal Academy in 1824, as no. 219. Notes: This portrait belongs to the illustrious peerage of the Walker family of Rotherham and Nottingham, conserved in Clifton Park and Museum and in the annals of British Industrial history. The Walker portraits of Joshua (1750-1815) and Susannah Need (1760-1831) painted by John Russell, and their heirs Henry (1785-1860) and Elizabeth Abney (1786-1850) painted by Ramsay Reinagle were donated to the museum at Clifton Park, the site of family's main estate, in 1944 by the great-granddaughter of Henry and Elizabeth, Winifred Causton. Causton's grandmother Caroline Elizabeth and her two siblings Henry and Emily Walker are mentioned, but they are not included further in the lineage, principally because their portraiture is not part of the Museum collection. The immense and stunning portrait offered here, which descended in the family of Winifred's sister Marguerite Magdalen Daisy Radcliffe, nee Ashton-Case Walker (1883-1943), represents the missing third generation of Walkers. Painted by Reinagle around the same time that he painted the parents' pendant portraits, its scale, size and setting are another testament to the family's wealth and prestige. The Walker family rose to great prominence during the Industrial Revolution, becoming the iron and steel magnate of Northern England. The Walker Iron and Steel Works founded by Samuel Walker and his brothers in 1746 at Rotherham was one of the largest iron foundries in the country and supplied material for iron bridges and most of the iron cannons used by the British government until 1815. The business continued to prosper under his son Joshua and grandson Henry (1785-1860), who secured the commission in 1819 for the cast iron of London's Southwark bridge. This portrait of Henry's children painted shortly afterward prominently features the family industry. Henry Frederick (1807-1866), the family heir, holds a large iron pinch point bar that the Walker foundry produced in great quantities as it was the primary tool used for moving cannons and metal materials onto boats, bridges and rail cars, and for digging and breaking ground. In the background of the painting, the three distinct ashlar arches of the bridge at Blyth Hall are prominently displayed. Though the former owner of the estate William Melish erected the bridge in 1770, the Walker Foundry likely supplied its wrought-iron railing. The inclusion of the bridge at Blyth is all the more significant, because Henry and Elizabeth Walker resided at Blyth Hall, and did not occupy the larger property at Clifton Park until after Henry's mother Susannah died in 1831. Another notable feature in this family portrait is the inclusion of the pen and paper that Caroline Elizabeth (1808-1883) holds. Like her mother, who was a published poet and outspoken abolitionist, Caroline was also an accomplished writer in her youth. As for Emily (1811-1845), little is known about her. She married Thomas Streatfeild Lightfoot, Esq. (1813-1895), and dies prematurely at 35. After Henry Frederick died without issue in 1866, the family estate passed to Thomas Edward Case (1848-1882), Caroline Elizabeth's eldest son by John Ashton Case of Ince and Thingwall Hall, Lancaster (1804-1855). Following his death, it was inherited by his younger brother Henry Ashton Case (1851-1935), who adopted the name Walker.
