    J. REINHART (1761-1847), Ancient Sepulchre in Via Nomentana, around 1800, Etching

    Est: €600 - €800

Johann Christian Reinhart (1761 Hof/Bavaria - 1847 Rom): View of the ruins of Sepolcro Antico in Via Nomentana Roman tomb, c. 1800, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Date: c. 1800 Description: On the meadow in front of the ruin with grazing goats and a shepherd playing the flute. This sheet is from the series of prints with views of six Roman tombs by Johann Christian Reinhart. It marks the beginning of Reinhart's collaboration with the Nuremberg publisher and art dealer Johann-Friedrich Frauenholz (1758-1822). Published in 1792, the series epitomises Reinhart's desire for an Italy steeped in antiquity. Unlike Piranesi's wildly romantic architectural vedute, in which fantasy and reality form an indissoluble alliance, Reinhart sought to realise an approach that reflected reality in his sheets. It was precisely this antiquity that was to continue to appear as part of the living world of contemporary man. Where Piranesi's visions often slip into the abysmal and gruesome, Reinhart consciously stages a reconciliation of man with the relics of the past. Their presence fulfils two important factors of the cult of memory: on the one hand, they point out that nothing lasts forever, no matter how magnificent and powerful it may be. Secondly, they emphasise the continuity of life, even beyond death, for which the tombs develop a double symbolism. However, Reinhart refrains from levelling the actual significance of the buildings. The overgrowth and decay are not signs of oblivion. In terms of composition, Reinhart integrates the tombs into his etchings in such a way that they are always seen from a lower point of view and thus appear elevated to the viewer. Like monuments, they tower into the sky and rise above the human plane. The only exception is the sheet with the view of the interior of the Tomb of the Nasons. Here the sun illuminates the empty interior of the tomb and Reinhart refrains from depicting people in this sheet. This can be understood as a medial shift: Whereas in the other sheets we look at the entire scene from the outside and survey everything like an uninvolved observer, in this sheet we are involved ourselves and assume the position that is given to the Italian shepherds in the other sheets. This method increases the viewer's sense of belonging to the scenery and thus brings him closer to Reinhart's idea of a living antiquity. We are standing in antiquity ourselves. Vgl. motivisch und stilistisch: Johann Christian Reinhart "Landschaft mit dem Schloss von Ariccia", Titelblatt der Folge "Die Sechs Landschaften mit der Widmung an Josef Abel", 1811, Radierung, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kupferstichkabinett, InvNr. 40818a (WVZ Feuchtmayr 109). Provenienz: Kunsthandlung Kempe, Dresden, 1971. […]".
